are you running 64bit ubuntu?

if so, try the 64bit .deb for ubuntu (Ubuntu 8.10+ 64-bit (http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-64) ) from here:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/post-download/

then just double-click it to install.

hope that helps.

I'm definitely running a 32-bit processor (believe me, I tried to download the 64-bit version of Windows 7) and just downloaded the 64 bit version of Ubuntu Skype after reading this.

It turns out that's just a typo on Skype's behalf. Those aren't programs for 32 and 64 bit processors, they're supposed to be i386 and AMD64 processor architectures. But thanks for solving my Skype problem even if it was unintentional.
