I just bought a SanDisk flash drive today, and I didn't believe what I had found on the back: They say it works with Linux! Of course we all know it works, but SanDisk is a pretty big company, and (other than Google) not very many would officially support it. (like Best Buy) I took pictures, but they're pretty bad on account of a bad camera. (All I have is my cell phone and my laptop's webcam, and the cellphone is better.) I was wondering if anybody else had encountered any household mentioning of Linux.

Welp, I got a Sansa Fuze from BestBuy on April 30, 2010 and it supports Ogg Vorbis and FLAC!

More hardware are getting 'Linux support' on the box. But, usually, there are disclaimers and other info stated.

The problem with flash drives, from what I perceive, is the mounting of them. I like the drive to automatically mount. I have yet to have a problem unplugging a drive after it's mounted although I do try to have it unmount beforehand. However, I've had numerous occasions in which the drive isn't mounting and it has to be done manually. One can google to find so many reports of a usb (flash) drive not mounting or being detected.

Sure, it's usually working fine but this is the main issue that I can tell with usb flash drives in Linux. They are supported but sometimes needs extra tweaking to get working.

I haven't had any problems using a variety of thumb drives on Linux.

External hard drives too.

I brought 6 Sandisk 2GB Cruzer's and a 4GB titainium last year the first thing I did with them is use windows to get rid of the U3 rubbish whats the point of the U3 thing if it cant be used in Linux :P
But yeah they work great in Linux and windows file swapping between OS no problem...

Most USB Mass Storage Devices work on linux. No fireworks there.

I felt the same as you when I saw that little penguin on the back of my 16GB Cruzer Micro case :)

Ye might be interested in how I repaired my older 2GB Cruzer Micro (http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/repairing), reusing an otherwise dead drive :)

Well, awesome! My father said this is a sign that someday, I (we) will be saying, "I used Linux before it was popular!" I think it's catching on.
