View Full Version : [ubuntu] Trouble Triple Booting Windows 7 32/64 Bits and Ubuntu 10.04

Hello
I am having an issue trying to triple boot Win 7 32Bit.....64Bit and Ubuntu 64Bit. I have my 2 Win 7's installed already and am able to boot into either one fine but when I install Ubunut 64Bit when it reboots and gives me the Grub loader, if I want to select one of the Win 7 OS's at the Win 7 Bootloader screen, it just gives a black screen and puts me back at the Grub screen each time. Is there something I am missing or is this a bug of some sort...............any info will be very helpful as this is driving me crazy as I have installed over and over only to come across the same problem.

Can you boot into ANY of the OS's? Or, is just booting into Win7 failing?

If the latter is the case, how did you make room on your drive for Ubuntu? Did you allow the Ubuntu installer to shrink one of your Win7 partitions?

If that is what you did, you will have to boot from a Win7 Repair CD and repair the boot loader of the Win7 version that is not booting.

This will wipe out GRUB, but it will get Win7 booting again.

No I split the drive into 3 partitions and installed Ubuntu on 1 that was recognized as free space. Ubuntu runs fine its just when I go to the Windows Bootloader, and try to select that it just goes through a loop and ends up right back at the Grub installer. So as of right now I no longer have access to any version of Windows 7, 32Bit or 64 after installing Ubuntu 10.04.

You installed grub2 to the windows boot partitions:

Fix for most, a few have other issues, better than windows fix in many cases as it also fixes other parameters:
This has instructions on using testdisk to repair the install of grub to the boot sector for windows from Ubuntu or Linux LiveCD.

Your windows in sda5 is in a logical partition and will only be bootable thru the copy of windows in sda1 or another primary partition.

When/If you get windows working then you will need to reinstall grub to drive sda (not partition sda1 or sda2).

Install from LiveCD install on sda6 and want grub2 in drive sda's MBR:
Find linux partition, change sda6 if not correct, and/or even sda if sdb wanted:

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
