View Full Version : [SOLVED] Moving open windows to screen corners & desktops ???

This is something that I'm pretty certain must be possible with Ubuntu/Gnome but I have absolutely no idea how to do this. Compiz is enabled and there's a window moving manager or something like that there, but I really don't understand how it works.

What I'd like to do is the following:
No matter which application I open up, I'd like for it to appear in it's previously assigned size at the top left corner of the screen. Then I'd like for the second opened application to appear at the top right corner of the screen. Third app bottom left corner and the fourth app in the bottom right corner. Not maximized or minimized, but sized the way that I last left those windows. Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

Terminal commands are fine as long as you don't start explaining over the top of my head since I've only been using Ubuntu for about 15 months now.

I'd also like to assign a startup application to open up in a second workspace. Is that possible, and how? I have one particular application that I use exclusively on the second workspace and it would be great if that application would just open up automatically there after a reboot. Your help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Alright, I found a solution that may actually work for others too, anyone who's been wanting to minimize active windows in a more visible manner without losing gnome or pre-existing compiz settings. Here's what I did ... screenshots below:

After playing around with half a dozen Window Managers which included X-Tile, Bluetile, and various others, I realized that all I really wanted was the ability to view all off my minimized windows on the screen at all times without them taking up any more space than needed. Most important of all was the need to keep my minimized windows the size that I want after restoring them again. So I simply created another panel - made it about 90% transparent - followed by placing it on the left edge of the screen.

By resizing the panel to a height (which now is width) of 32 px all of my minimized applications are visible permanently, allowing me to switch between them at random with a single mouseclick, while at the same time keeping my desktop free and uncluttered.
Best of all ... this works regardless if you have 3, 5, or 10 minimized apps. :guitar:

Granted, the windows aren't precisely where I initially wanted them, but now I can use a lot more open windows if I feel like it and all of them will be instantly accessible. Works for me ....
