Xubuntu on Mac G3 problem

Installing Xubuntu 6.0.6-1 Mac alternate version on an old G3 for a friend. iMac has 64 Mb ram and 350 MHz processor. Install goes well until it comes to configuring gconf2 which has now been running for five hours. As this is an old machine I don't know if this time is excessive or not. I have tried two different discs both of which checkout MD5sum. Anyone had any experience of this or any advice?

As I got no replies to this, I just let the machine run.......... and run...... and........

Just as a warning to anyone trying the same install....

Now, 18 hours after starting the install on this computer, it has finally moved on from gconf2 and has reached the dizzy heights of 69% of the install - 10% further than 8 hours ago. I guess it must be doing SOMETHING.
