Making money in software.

Hi, I have what I think is a good idea for a software package, in an indeal world it's great to give things away for free. Do people still pay for software anymore?, with Ubuntu the Package Manager lists loads of free software and that's great, over on the other side (windows) loads of people just "crack" the software so they don't have to pay for it, so I can't seem to find a way of making money in software anymore?

Even the cloud, Apple charge £59 while M$ charge £0.
