Pinguy OS an out-of-the-box working operating system for everyone, not just geeks ;)

This OS is for people that have never used Linux before or for people that just want an out-of-the-box working OS without doing all the tweaks and enhancements that everyone seems to do when installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu or other Linux based Distro's.

What Is Pinguy OS?

Ubuntu is a great OS and undoubtedly the most popular and easiest Linux based Distro to use but even with its default setup and chosen programs it's still lacking functionality and ease of use for most new users. So what I decided to do was build a Distro that looks good, could do everything most user would ever want to do and that was very simple to use.

I started out by listening to what my friends and family wanted to use their PC for and found the most user friendly programs for the task they wanted to do. After a while I got a good idea what most people use their PC for and what programs where the easiest to use. Like using Shotwell for easily uploading images to Facebook, gtkpod for putting music, photos and video on a ipod/iphone and mvPod for converting the video to a iPod friendly format.

So all the programs in Pinguy OS have been chosen because of there ease of use and functionality, I also changed every file type to open with the right program, like for some reason by default .iso are opened with Archive Manager so I changed that to Brasero Disc Burner.

As I already said apart from it being easy to use I also wanted it to be a very good looking operating system. There are now a lot of programs out there for Linux to give the OS a very smart and polished implementation, like CoverGloobus (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/02/covergloobus-16-wow-lives-up-to-its.html), Gloobus Preview (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/05/covergloobus-gloobus-preview-come-to.html), GNOME Do (http://news.softpedia.com/news/GNOME-Do-The-King-of-Launchers-104859.shtml), and Docky (http://lifehacker.com/5411278/docky-separates-from-gnome-do-still-a-clever-linux-app-dock). These programs don't just give the OS a good look and feel but they are also very useful and handy.

Pinguy OS is just an optimise build of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Minimal CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) with added repositories, tweaks and enhancements that can run as a Live DVD or be installed. It has all the added packages needed for video, music and web content e.g. flash and java (http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/4931/plugins10001.png), plus a few fixes as well. Like fixing the wireless problems, gwibber's Facebook problem and flash videos in full-screen.

Everything is set-up for samba, all you need to do is right click a folder you want to share and add a password in samba using system-config-samba.
It also has a UPnP/DLNA server (pms-linux) so you can share your music, video's etc. With a PS3, XBOX 360, Smart Phones or any other UPnP/DLNA media reader.

Nautilus has been replaced for Elementary-Nautilus (http://elementary-project.com/news/nautilus-in-elementary/) with added plug-ins (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/02/cover-thumbnailer-07-is-out-now-works.html) so it can get music (http://gtk-apps.org/content/show.php/CoverChooser?content=117330) and video (http://www.webupd8.org/2009/09/how-to-set-imdb-images-as-video.html) art from the web.
The default theme is Elementary (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/03/new-version-of-elementary-gnome-theme.html) using ttf-droid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droid_%28font%29) font with Docky (http://wiki.go-docky.com/index.php?title=Welcome_to_the_Docky_wiki) and a custom Conky (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9501964&postcount=12986).

I have added DVB support to Totem for anyone with a TV card that wants to watch tv on their PC but don't want to install a dedicated program like myth-tv.

Why Make Pinguy OS?

I know what I am doing is not going to appeal to everyone, and a lot of people are not going to like the idea of me using Ubuntu instead of building my own base, even though Ubuntu uses Debian. I do have a set of goals for Pinguy OS that I am going to keep too. The problem is if you loose track of your goals and try to keep everyone happy the Distro will fall apart very quickly.

There maybe a few programs on there that may seem out of place like PMS-Linux, but this will be a must have program pretty soon because its a UPnP/DLNA server, and lot of people are getting entertainment systems that use UPnP/DLNA to stream music/video. Nearly everything that is coming out has the ability to access a UPnP/DLNA server. So this is something I thought the Distro should have. I was going to use Mediatomb but after testing it on a few people they really struggled to get it working that's why I ended up with PMS-Linux.

What I would like for this Distro is for everyone to be able to install it and use it straight away with little or no knowledge about Linux or computers. But I don't want to make it so simplistic that it becomes un-usable for more complex tasks that a more experienced user would want to do.

There doesn't seem to be a Distro out there that's setup and ready to use with the minimal amount of needed programs. The Distro's I have seen that go over 700MB seem to try and fill a 4.7GB DVD. The problem with this is they fill it with way to many programs that most users are never going to use, and the programs are usually poorly chosen because they just don't have the time to test and try other ones. Also I see some of these Distro's install KDE and Gnome together. I have never understood the reasoning behind anyone using more then one desktop on the same Distro.

Then there are the Distros that just don't add enough because they have to keep it under 700MB. These Distro just feel unfinished, they are lacking so much functionality out of the box, they look dowdy and stale compared to a more modern operating system and can't even share files on your network because most of the time Samba has been left out. I have never understood why any one would release a Distro that looks worse then XP and could do less out of the box.

Pinguy OS Goals

The goal is to have an out-of-the-box working operating system with intelligent chosen programs that all work and are easy to use. I don't want it to have every program under the sun like Ultimate Edition does, I just want a few well built programs for tasks that most people do. I don't want to many programs on there that can do the same task.

Most people buy their PC/Laptops with the OS installed and preconfigured. Not many people install their OS their self and the ones that try usually haven't got a clue what to do afterwards.

What I am trying to do is to have a operating system that works and acts like a preconfigured OS like the ones you get when buying a new PC. that's also very easy to be installed.

32-Bit or 64-Bit?

If you have a 64-Bit processor you should go with the 64-Bit version of the OS, unless you have a technical or business reasons for not migrating to 64-bit Linux with compatible hardware, there is no reason to stick around with a 32-bit. The main reason for going with 64-bit is because it's faster then 32-bit on the same hardware (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_32_pae&num=1) and there aren't many programs now that don't run on 64-bit.

The following processors support 64-Bit:

AMD 64-Bit processors ( Athlon 64, Opteron, later Sempron, Turion 64, Phenom, Athlon II and Phenom II processors)
Intel 64-Bit processors (Celeron D, later Pentium 4, Pentium D, later Xeon, Core 2 (not Core Duo), Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and Atom processors)

There maybe more so please check to see if your processor is compatible. If you have any doubts or are not sure if you have a 64-Bit processor go with the 32-Bit version.

Was this post really necessary? Pinguy, good work. I'm glad your friends/family appreciate your work.

Thanks I'm just trying to do my bit to get Ubuntu out there.
This OS isn't for people who know how to use Ubuntu it's for people that are new to it. Ubuntu maybe easy to use but not all of the programs for it are, so all I did was listen to what people wanted and found the most user friendly programs for the task.

Like PMS-Linux, its not the best Upnp server but it's much easier to use then mediatomb, and it just works. Shotwell's really easy for uploading images to facebook and gtkpod is great for putting images, photos and video on a ipod/iphone and they can use mvPod to covert the video.

The system was built to have eye candy (CoverGloobus, Gloobus Preview, GNOME Do, Docky) and for every part of it to be user-friendly, I even changed every file type to open with the right program, like for some reason by default .iso are opened with Archive Manager so I changed that to Brasero Disc Burner.

OSX has a good user interface design so why not use the best aspects of it. They screwed us with Darwin so why not take something useful from them.

Again ease of use. Less is sometimes more.

HeHe . It's up to you . But i can't figure out how cairo is less easier .
Your distro is not just one with some different default installation.
Cool work . How did you do this much change with remastersys?

I once created a distro(with reconstructor) . Your defaults look like that distro.

I once created a distro(with reconstructor) . Your defaults look like mine .

The Default profile folder is at:

/etc/skel
The main 4 folders you need to copy there are:

.config
.gconf
.gnome2
.local
You will have to go into each folder to make sure you delete a few things, like any apps in /.gconf/apps that you don't want the settings copied and /.gnome2/keyrings
That's the easy way. The proper way would be to find the settings folder for each item and change it there. To change firefox default settings you would do it here:
/usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/defaults/profile

Plus any fixes you do or editing to system files get copied when making a backup using remastersys.

Uh.. ramming 64bit OS down peoples throats is a big wank, unless you have huge datasets it achieves nothing except bragging rights amongst the preteen geeks.

Uh.. ramming 64bit OS down peoples throats is a big wank, unless you have huge datasets it achieves nothing except bragging rights amongst the preteen geeks.

64-bit is faster then 32-bit on the same hardware:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_32_pae&num=1

In the fourteen tests for this article we did not find using Ubuntu's 32-bit PAE kernel to have a dramatic performance impact whether it be positive or negative. Granted, we were using just 4GB of system memory that is common to many desktops, but if using 8GB, 16GB, or even a greater memory capacity the performance penalties are perhaps higher. By far though exhibiting the best performance was the Ubuntu 64-bit kernel that often ended up being leaps and bounds better than the 32-bit kernel. Unless you have technical or business reasons for not migrating to 64-bit Linux with compatible hardware, there is no reason to stick around with a 32-bit kernel and worrying about physical address extension. If you want to run your own kernel benchmarks, give the Phoronix Test Suite a try that offers more than 120 test profiles and 60 test suites.

64-bit processors have been around for years so most people should have one.
I've got an old Compaq kicking around that's about 5-6 years old that came with a AMD 3200+ and 512MB of ram that can run this.

This OS isn't for really old hardware, for that use Puppy.

Just wanted to personally thankyou for your take on Ubuntu. This is simply awesome. The one issue I did happen to get though was your playonlinux ppa was outdated. Other then that its great. :D

BTW I'll be sharing this with a few of my more newbish linux buddies. Hopefully this will make them more confident in their linux kung fu.

Do you have a website up? I know you have a torrent. If you decide to go ahead with a website, I'd gladly donate to your project. Might I also recommend using squarespace.com for your hosting. They are dead simple and great QoS. You can't beat $8 a month for the service you get.

No there isn't any website up for the OS (not yet anyway). There's still a few things I want to do with the OS first like de-brand it, have a custom plymouth boot screen and to be able to use Burg (haven't found away yet to use burg and boot the Live DVD) plus I am thinking about doing a 32-bit version as a few people (http://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/co3ij/pinguy_os_1004_x64_please_try/) have been asking me to do one.

Also I just want to see how popular/demand for the OS there is before putting all my time and effort into building a website.

There isn't any 32bit version because I have a 64bit PC with 4GB of ram and I am never going to run a 32bit OS on this PC.

All this Distro is, is a custom built Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 that can run as a Live DVD or be installed, it has all the added packages needed for video, music and web content .eg flash and java (http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/4931/plugins10001.png), plus I have done a few fixes as well. like fixing wireless problems, gwibber's facebook problem and flash videos in fullscreen.

Everything is setup for samba, all you need to do is right click a folder you want to share and add a password in samba using system-config-samba.

I have added a Upnp server as well so you can share your music, video's .ect with a PS3, XBOX 360 or any other Upnp media reader.

Nautilus has been changed for Elementary-Nautilus with added plugins so it can get music and video art from the web.

The default theme is Elementary using ttf-droid font with Docky (http://wiki.go-docky.com/index.php?title=Welcome_to_the_Docky_wiki) and a custom Conky (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9501964&postcount=12986).

Here's Some Screenshots:

This is a magnificent take on Ubuntu, usability & productivity. I've been using this OS for about 10 hours now and it's wonderful. The default apps satisfies like more than half of my requirements but I think it will do well for new Linux users. If your going to continue modding it and releasing new versions, you should consider including a app to mount iso or img files(e.g Right click->mount file). Great work though.

It didn't work for me when I right clicked a .img file.

EDIT: I had to click "open with" then select "Archive Mounter" to get it work.

64 bit is faster than 32 only if there is plenty of ram . In my system with only 1GB ram, 64 is slower .

Looks like a wonderful piece of work. I am very much looking forward to trying it out in a VM!

OSX has a good user interface design so why not use the best aspects of it. They screwed us with Darwin so why not take something useful from them.

+1. Great argument - absolutely to the point. :D

Overall though it seems to be very well done, I like it.

I was thinking about using Chromium over Firefox but I still really like Firefox. Firefox to me is like a good old reliable drinking buddy that's always there for you. I just haven't got the heart to replace him yet.

Plus Chromium looks like a fisher price toy.

That's about the dynamic of it. lol Plus I don't like google...

I downloaded your distro only to find out what I feared. My ancient machine won't support 64 bit. :( I was anxious to try TED, but to be honest I probably wouldn't have used most of the programs that were installed.

pinguy,

I've now tried it out under VMware Fusion. I think it's great. Both the selection of applications and the way they're presented to the user e.g. in the application menu are great. I haven't experienced a more solid selection focused on new Linux users.

Some minor remarks regarding my experiences:

First, does it make sense in the harddisk section of conky to list Root as well as Home if the Home directory resides in the root partition following the standard Pinguy OS installations settings?

Second, conky does not adjust its place on the desktop if I enlarge the virtual machine's window - i.e. if I adjust the monitor's resolution. (I haven't used conky on other installations yet. Therefore, I don't know whether my observation is specific to your configuration.)

Third, on the top menu bar, only the chat symbol is aligned right. Probably all icons starting with Webilder's one should also be aligned right, shouldn't they?

Eventually, if it was technically possible to hide the Desktop menu if only the desktop is shown, this might be easier for new Linux users (especially those not having used OS X before).

I hope these remarks are helpful. Your work is a really nice contribution. Thanks a lot!

Uh.. ramming 64bit OS down peoples throats is a big wank, unless you have huge datasets it achieves nothing except bragging rights amongst the preteen geeks.

Freakin' hilarious post, thanks for the good laugh...

(edit didn't notice the poll) - I haven't tried it, but I like what I see in it. And to all the "too many apps I won't use", well, Ubuntu comes with a whole crap load of apps I find absolutely and utterly worthless. I spend a good week ripping out the crap and installing what I want after a fresh install - fspot, for example. Worthless app... (apologies to the developers).

Thanks for your input. You are right about the aliment of the panel icons, that will have to be fixed.

I suppose Conky HD settings could be changed, but I really don't think it's much of an issue. The placement problem must be with running it in VMware as this does not happen running it on a PC.

The Desktop menu (gnome2-globalmenu) can't be changed in that way,and it's meant to be like that.

Thanks again for your input it's definitely food for thought.

I don't know if people think that the list of installed apps are installed along side the apps you already get with Ubuntu, because it's not. This Distro started life out as a MinimalCD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and I added the programs I wanted on to that. That list is it, there isn't any f-spot, eog, evolution ect. What you see in the list is what you get.

Build a 32bit version of this and I will seriously give it a try (maybe a review) and if it is good start promoting this.

I say this because over my last three years in the Linux world I've found I generally have less issues with a 32bit OS than I do with a 64bit OS (Flash is a huge part of this). Plus I work in a school and in order to use the SMART board software I need a 32bit Linux install (they only compile 32bit autopack builds). Plus with a PAE kernel I can still have my 4+ gigs of RAM on a 32bit system.

Also - I see global menu in your screen shots but do not see it on the application's list. Is it included by default?

The 32-Bit is now up. There is only a torrent at the moment until I sort out somewhere to host it.

This will be slow as I am seeding it from home, it will probably take about 10hr to download with my speed.

I will get more bandwidth for it but it won't be until tomorrow.

Next time, you might want to restrain yourself. I know it's hard, since the time passed behind the anonymity of your keyboard is the only time you ever feel empowered, and feels the social norms doesn't apply to your grand self, but with all due respect (which in retrospect, means none), no one cares about your so called opinion. And no one's laughing at your troll, neither.

Any idea how to install the OS through a USB?
Tried using LiveUsbCreator, but my laptop doesn't recognise the usb device as bootable.

I make these distros all the time. I do a lot of family and friends PC's and I have got all of them converted to Ubuntu. It saves me a lot of time making the Distro then install that on there PC's. This is just the first time I have uploaded my Distro to the web.

I'm downloading the 32-bit version (mainly because of the awful Adobe Flash).

I prefer Pidgin over Empathy, too.

However, I VERY MUCH prefer Mozilla Firefox over Google Chrome!!
The fonts are rendered better, page scrolling is a lot smoother with Firefox, the add-ons of Firefox are a lot more and more stable. And you're absolutely free to do whatever you want (if you don't like Google).

Very nice work!

There is no webcam support for pidgin. That's the only reason. I was thinking about using kopete but didn't really want to have a load of KDE lib's on a gnome system.

I really struggled trying to decide what IM to use. The other thing I found hard was finding a good music player. Rhythmbox is fine but it's not the best music players out there. Really wish there where a file system browser/tree (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/item/16154/) view to Rhythmbox.

I would of used Songbird but it's not being developed any more for linux. There is a project called Nightingale (http://getnightingale.org/) that aims to use the new builds of Songbird and port it to linux, but the project leaders look like they are more interested in other things then actually working on Nightingale.

I was also thinking about using Banshee but I just don't like it, I really wanted to and did use it for awhile but hated the way it organised songs. If you have a lot of compilation albums it was useless.

These are probably the only two things I would change on the next version (empathy/rhythmbox) as I am not really that happy with either of them. They are just good enough for now.

What I would like to use is aTunes that has a GTK+ GUI that isn't written in Java and had access to the Ubuntu One Music Store/7digital or Amazon MP3, and a gnome kopete.

No! That is NOT definitely a good idea. It'll become a bloated desktop environment.

Songbird
Toooooooo heavy!!!!

Banshee
Heavy and a little bloated.

I strongly believe that if you want your distro to be successful and easy to use, you should concentrate on some of the default applications of the GNOME Project. They will be developed rapidly and more actively. As well as the integrity of the distro will be more coherent.

In this sense I highly recommend you to stay with Empathy and Rhythmbox. Or at least with Empathy (and you already know that I like Pidgin more, aren't you? Well (surprise!), I've been already using Empathy for 6 months.)

Downloading the 32 bit version right now, but from your app lists, I'd make a recommendation: have a couple dialogs or a custom install mode where you can make some switches; e.g. some people like chrome, some like firefox, and some weird ones like me even like opera.

I tried your OS today. Kudos. I like the feel of it. how do you make the menus show up in the top bar like that? Also, what app is handling the background change. I like it, but would want to be able to turn it on and off, and have a bit more control there. All and all, good work. Looks like you put some serious time in.

It's Webilder. Up in the panel on the right hand side you will see something that's meant to look like a camera. Just remove that and the wallpapers will stop changing, or right click it to change the settings.

gnome2-globalmenu (http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/) puts the menu in the top panel.

There is no webcam support for pidgin.

Ahh I rarely use cam chat on anything other than Skype - the big thing that kills me about empathy is that for AIM it does not show which on my online contacts are currently "mobile".

If Pidgin had webcam support I would of used it. To many of my friends use MSN or Yahoo chat with there cams to use a IM that can't use one. The first time I made a custom Ubuntu install disc it had Pidgin on it, but as soon as they tried to use there webcam's I was getting phone calls on how to make it work, so I installed kopete instead and they where happy with it.

Now they are using empathy and are really happy with it. You must bare in mind that my friends are not into computers, there the type of people that think google is a browser, so all they care about is if there webcam works.

There are a couple of packages missing from the 32-bit that should of been installed.

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-gtk nautilus-share

You may want to update grub to get rid of the Windows 7 entry in the grub menu. (Press alt+F2 tick the box that says Run in terminal then type sudo update-grub hit enter and add your password.)

Another thing is I am thinking about including cpufreqd and cpufrequtils in the next release, so if you want to give it ago in this version you can.

These should be the only bugs you come across with this distro.

As it's only two packets that needs installing there really isn't much point re-uploading it.

It will work fine without them. I'm just a bit anal when something isn't complete.

All the two packets do is give OpenOffice a better look in gnome and puts a right click entry for samba.

Two more bugs:

The first one - when you right-click a file and choose "Send to -> Send as: E-mail", Moz Thunderbird is only started and no new message with the selected file as attachment is composed.

The second one - The FireTray add-on of Moz Thunderbird counts the Junk messages, too. I filed the bug on the bug tracker of the add-on. It is issue 120.

Great work again! This Ubuntu spin should definitely has its own web-site!!

One of the best parts about Pinguy as opposed to using Mint or Zorin is that it recognizes that it is Ubuntu at it's base. As such it does not rebrand itself with a new boot logo or icons. Next time you are looking to install Ubuntu on your own, or anyone else's system, you should seriously consider using Pinguy instead - if you do odds are you will be pleasantly surprised.

To fix the problem with FireTray. Only if you are using IMAP, go to Edit > Account Settings > Synchronisation & Storage and un-tick the top box.

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8973/accountsettings003.jpg

To fix right-click a file and choose "Send to -> Send as: E-mail" can you try going to the main menu > Control Centre > Personal > Preferred Applications and under Mail Reader pick Thunderbird.

Go to "Account Settings..." > "Junk Settings", enable "Move new junk messages to:" and after setting "Other:", select "Spam on user@gmail.com".

That's to do with the theme. I have added another theme on there for people that don't like the default one. It still fits in nicely with the Elementary theme.

Nice operating system pinguy. :)

The only suggestion I would make, looking at it from a new user point of view would be to get rid of the Docky on the left and maybe stick the places on the desktop or the bottom Docky.

It would also look a lot better if you could get rid of any Ubuntu/Mint branding.

There is sth strange concerning the language support.
I see that you've installed all varieties of English language support. However, I installed the Bulgarian language support and it seems that the system locales haven't been changed. My Wine "windows" applications do not recognize the Bulgarian (Cyrillic) encoding of text... and this is the way things work when no BG support is installed.

I've noticed one more bug. The Skype control Helper in Docky does not function when Skype is started unless you close the Skype window and then reopen it.

Also the static version of Skype (which I personally prefer) cannot make use of this Docky helper. And I prefer the static version because you can change the font and its size through "qtconfig" (this is a thing that cannot be done with the ".deb" package of Skype anymore that resides in the Ubuntu Lucid repo or is downloaded from the Skype web-site).

Kind regards,

Hey, Pinguy. The first thing I like about your distro mod is, you've not re-branded it

I agree. I like the fact that it is still branded as "Ubuntu".

However, I am not able to install this for some reason. I installed it in Virtual Box and played with it (it's nice).

I then attempted to install it twice and it failed both times. The first time I booted the live CD. And then started the installer from the desktop. The installer got about 80% through and then just disappeared.

The second attempt I started the installer directly. Again, halfway through it failed with an error about being unable to install and then booting into a live desktop to resolve the issue.

It's a shame because I'd really like to give it a go. Also, I'm able to successful install Ubuntu and Mint on this laptop so I'm not sure what the deal is.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

The way this sounds it could be a couple of things. The first would be there isn't enough space on the drive or a bad DVD burn.

If you have plenty of space on the HD try re-burning the image but at a slower speed and see if that helps. As you was able to install it in VirtualBox the image you downloaded must be fine and not corrupted.
Pinguy OS uses just over 5GB when installed so anything under that is to small, you should give it at least 10 GB.

Thanks for the quick reply. In terms of hard disk space, I have plenty, 200 GB.

As for the DVD burn, I actually tested the DVD by using it for the Virtual Box install (in other words I didn't use the iso file but the actual DVD). So I think the DVD is ok. Also, I've tried with two different burned DVDs with the same result.

I just tried the installer once more from the live desktop.

According to the messages during the install process, the last step it completes before crashing is "creating user" at 82% in.

Thanks for this Pinguy OS. I've been checking Linux now and then since 1995 but always stayed with windows. I've gotten quite knowledgeable with Windows from 3.11 to 7 but I still keep checking Linux.

I think this version is the one that will allow me to quit Windows. I've had Pinguy OS installed for a few hours and will keep using it from what I can tell. The only thing missing right now is to be able to play Guild Wars but that isn't reason enough to go back to Windows for me. It is so pleasant to use Linux like this I'm sticking with it. Please don't remove shutter. It's the shizzle. Markcynt probably has the compression setting wrong. [EDIT] I've just noticed he's also using jpg instead of png. Shutter IS the Shizzle. The fantastic cpature options, the profiles, the upload ability and the amazing Edit tool. It's the best.

Shutter in conjunction with the Edit feature (Shutter Drawing Tool) is amazing. Because I copied my Shutter settings from my Mint distro, I never had the chance to see if you'd already added that extra feature to shutter. If it's not, I highly recommend adding it. It's such a perfect tool for quickly editing and censoring pictures for uploading and publication to blogs, forums etc.

Great Distro BTW. I'm loving it. gPodder is my preferred Podcatcher though. Thanks for the amazing effort.

The only issue I've had so far, is with Conky. For some reason it changes to "always on top".

Apart from that, its a great control center to have in an Ubuntu based distro and its as close as we'll ever get to Mandriva Control Center.

Pinguy OS has got a Control Centre.

It might not be as good as Ubuntu Control Centre but it will do. I will look into Ubuntu Control Centre to see if it worth being put into the distro, but the last time I checked it was a bit buggy.

Unable to install Pinguy OS 64 bit.

I am running a Dell Vostra 1000 Laptop with 2Gb RAM, AMD 64 Athlon X2 and have tired multiple installs and keep getting the following error:

"The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."

I really like the look and feel of the OS when running on the Live CD, but wish I could get it to install correctly.

Update: I also tried the 32 bit version and got the same error. I get the error when the installation is about 80% complete.

I had the exact same issue. I did finally get it to install though. Are you, by chance, choosing to encrypt your home partition during the install? I don't know which of the following got me through the install but I changed my username to one longer than 3 characters, made my host name not end in a digit, and chose to not encrypt the home partition. I don't know which of those three was the issue but I would guess it was the encrypted home partition since the first two would be odd.

The concept of a Mandriva style control center for Ubuntu system administration is a sound one. You're right, the implementation of it is currently somewhat buggy but it has promise. To tie all the different tools in one place makes things easier for new users. It needs to be modified to work with whatever package manager is used by a distro and some other parts could be left to the users' discretion. But in general, its an idea I like since I can go and configure from one place what I need instead of having to wade through the menu to find it.

I've now used this distro for a couple of weeks and is very satisfied. During the period, I've had a couple of small troubles. I've lost the dock to the left, and the menu at the top right, which now just shows the Mint menu.

Is there any way I can get the left dock and the menu reset to the original values?

So far I am really liking the look and feel of this OS. But I am having one minor issue with the bottom and side dock. This may be a dumb question but is there a way to adjust the length of these docks? Once I add a few things to the dock, it looks like they don't change in size and some of the icons get cut off.

Sounds promising, DLing but probably won't get to testing it tonight. Question though does it come with b43 firmware or is it like Ubuntu and forces you to find someway to download it. (Which is a catch 22 if you don't have access to a physical line [or a USB wireless device that functions with Ubuntu vanilla] and your computer has a bcm43xx card ) If it lacks it please add it is the one major thing Ubuntu lacks. What seems to be often lost is making sure the user has out of the box access to the internet which includes providing all wireless drivers available on the CD/DVD. After all if you lack the driver required to access the internet, it being in the repo doesn't do you a lick of good.

Hi,

I haven't read the whole thread, so it might have been mentioned before:

Using /etc/skel for default gnome settings is highly discouraged in the GNOME decumentation. There are special files for all kinds of defaults. There is more information on this in the GNOME docs and the Ubuntu Wiki. Try this link for a start:

I really like it ;-)
Why?
* Gnome globelmenu
* Docky
* Nice theme - though a elementary window border (mac os-like) would be much better

What I suggest to make it even better ;-)
* Slim down the gtk theme: smaller icons, smaller (vertical) paddings in the widgets (look at this theme to get an impression what I want http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=119812&vote=good&tan=66384340&PHPSESSID=c0ab33fff8992172c982111092a9362f)
* Integrate the left dock into the bottom dock, then let it expand over the whole desktop (look at the attached screenshot)

Nice work anyway - keep going! ;-)
Perhaps you might want to join the elementary team (http://www.elementary-project.com)? They have a simmilar goal in mind. Maybe you can benefit from each other?

I have to say that I really like what you've done. I've been a fan of the mintmenu for a while now, so it was a nice treat to see it implemented.

I actually like the two docks. If I were using a smaller screen it might get in the way a bit, but on my 18.4 inch laptop, it sizes very well.

I do have one question though: Is it possible to move the top panel? I wanted to see how it would look if I swapped spots between the panel and the bottom dock, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to move that panel.

Anyhow, thanks for the great work. It's a wonderful Ubuntu setup, and doubly nice to not be attacked by constant branding (my one real complaint about Mint).

64-bit is faster then 32-bit on the same hardware:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_32_pae&num=1

64-bit processors have been around for years so most people should have one.
I've got an old Compaq kicking around that's about 5-6 years old that came with a AMD 3200+ and 512MB of ram that can run this.

This OS isn't for really old hardware, for that use Puppy.

I did see that Phoronix article & a careful reading of it tells me that going with 64bit builds achieves little real world improvement for most aspects of desktop usage. Currently immature 64bit drivers & OS's in general are more pain than gain. YMMV.

Its great to see an Ubuntu spin with all the essential multimedia stuff pre-installed but the really hard question is - is full support for ALL my hardware enabled (especially Wifi & Sound)?

It seems Broadcom Wifi of has been left out - as usual.

How bout sound? On a default Lucid install many people must go through the drudgery of locating & installing newer ALSA packages.
This alone is enough to send many, many people running straight back to their horrible *******.

Honestly I appreciate all the hard work you put into all the theming & eyecandy but to REALLY get Linux accepted ALL hardware must work (as much as humanly possible).
Default Lucid is arguably the least sucking Linux distro in the world when it comes to this aspect. Hope you can have time to focus on this area of the OS in the future.

Cheers!

To be honest it would take me well over a week to write up how to do this (and there are already books out there on how to do this), plus it wouldn't be the same using a Ubuntu base system as I didn't use that to make the distro. I used a Minimal CD.

I did a lot of work on Gnome with this distro (not working with the Gnome Team) so it actually has elements of Gnome 3/Shell. I also did a lot of work making sure it ran fast by striping out packages and running services and just doing an overall optimization of the distro.

The file attached to this post has all of the ppa: I used and a list of installed packages and libs.

With that you should be able to get something close to this distro. But it might not run as fast and some of the programs may not work as intended or play nice together.

That's why I made the distro instead of just releasing a pinguy-meta package. It's fine installing all these programs but you have to configure them afterwards.

You should start a help thread to find out why it isn't working right. Have you tried using unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to install?

This version of ubuntu has the same installer and will most likely run into the same problems, which is why I recommend starting a help thread in the Installation and Upgrades (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=333) sub-forum.

hi there!!
anyone here has installed pinguy os in a netbook?? i have a lenovo s12 and i have issues installing ubuntu 10.04 from usb.. it freeze in step 3 of installation, and i want to know if this distro have the same issues =)

Your best bet would be just to try it. I haven't personally installed it on a netbook so don't know if it will work but it is running a newer version of (ubiquity) the installer then what is used in Ubuntu 10.04.

The distro doesn't use that much resources but it does use more then Ubuntu for Docky ect.

For this to work well I would say you need a least 1GB of ram, but it should work just fine on 512MB but it might be a bit sluggish.

While not your Lenovo, I did an install on anold Eee PC 701 I have laying around to test it out.

It installed with no issues other than a longer install time. I only ran a few tests and the only issue I had was intermittent wireless, but the 701 has flaky wireless regardless of distro.

It ran slow, not excruciatingly slow, but slow enough for me to notice. And this is with me having upgraded the machine to 2gb ram.

The big problem, which is doubled with by the 7 inch screen size, is the lack of screen real estate. The two docks end up either taking up too much screen space, or they are made so small that they become unusable. This problem will be lessened on the Lenovo, but could still be an issue.

My opinion is that a netbook optimized distro will work better, but ymmv. Something with lower resource requirements and screen real estate optimization. There are a ton of great alternatives: Crunchbang, Jolicloud, Peppermint, just off the top of my head.

Pinguy OS has replaced stock Ubuntu as my "go to" OS on my laptop, but that's with an 18.4 inch screen. On a smaller screen with a slower system, I would probably go a different route.

Seems like it needs more time when starting.

gksudo gedit /.startconky.sh

and change sleep 20 && to sleep 30 && then save it and log-out.

If it still starts on-top of everything just delay the start-up by a bit longer. That number after sleep is in seconds.

Whats up with the boot times?
I installed bootchart to time it.
I have Linux Mint installed on one partition and it starts in 25 seconds.
However, PinguyOS installed on another partition takes over 60s!

However, PinguyOS installed on another partition takes over 60s!

Run this:

sudo rm /var/lib/ureadahead/pack

Reboot twice. First time to generate a new ureadahead. Then the second time you boot it, it should be a lot faster.

Pinguy OS will be slightly slower because of preload and samba, but the main problem with start-up speeds is with ureadahead (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1434502). It needs to be re-generated after a certain period of time. This isn't just a problem with Pinguy OS this is a problem with all distro's that use ureadahead. Linux Mint over a period of time will also slow down, it's just hasn't happened yet with your install.

Check out this thread and you will see where I helped out mendhak with his boot times.

I've noticed one minor issue and I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing it. When I try to close Thunderbird, it doesn't close on the first click... It takes two to close it. This is not an issue for me but I'm thinking about installing it on my parents machine and I can hear them now. Little stuff like that seem to bug them. Anyone else experience this or have an idea what is up?

One thing you could try is installing the new add-on for firetry.

Thanks for the tip. I tried installing the latest version but it didn't make a difference. However, you are right to target this add-on as the culprit. I disabled it and the issue goes away, so there is something going on with this add-on. This is a good solution for now though. Thanks!

sudo rm /var/lib/ureadahead/pack
[sudo] password for miro:

And the only folder in '/var/lib/ureadahead' is 'debugfs', which is empty.

Now what? My system boots more slowly than the standard Ubuntu 10.04, too.

Pinguy OS will be slightly slower because of preload and samba

Pinguy OS has a few more things starting at boot then Ubuntu to give the user a more friendlier system. The down fall of this is it will boot slightly slower, but for most people the speed will not be noticeable.

Wow. 20 secs. That's not right, it should only be slightly slower.
Try rebooting a couple of times to get a ureadahead file. Once you have the file at /var/lib/ureadahead/pack it should be faster.

I going to spend a couple of weeks on this to see if I can improve on boot times.

You can try to remove the whole left dock and then add a new one. It contains only the docklet called "Bookmarks".

Antoni, the Bluetooth support is not installed according to me.
Could you confirm that, please?

Thanks.

P.S.
The delay may be because of my file-system. I'm using 'reiserfs' now and I think that the FS checks slow down the start-up time considerably. I'm gonna investigate more deeply this issue today.

This has happened to me once. The problem with me was because I right clicked a folder and went to Open With Other Application... and chose VLC with out un-ticking Remember this application for "Folder" files

How I fixed it was to right click a folder Open With Other Application... and choose File Browser

If you want to open folders with VLC just make sure Remember this application for "Folder" files is un-ticked.

I have been on and off experimenting with Linux distros for the past 5 years or so.

This is the first one that I've actually kept around and used more than windows. Thanks for that.

I had a few irritations I thought people on here might help remedy.

Configuring the gnome panel has proven to be quite a pain. The mint-update icon and network manager applets are immovable. It took a while to learn how to remove the little envelope icon from the indicator applet (by removing indicator-messages package). And I still don't have a straightforward volume control slider.

I went to Edit->"Customize Toolbar" on the 'Global Menu Panel Applet' desktop menu and it killed conky for some reason.

Those are mainly trite complaints, but a real usability issue is that when headphones are plugged in, it doesn't auto-detect and disable the speakers. I had found an option to control this in other distros, but no luck here.

Also, when I first started using Pinguy, rhythmbox would display the playing track info when I moused over its icon in docky. That no longer happens. Anyone have an idea?

Kudos to this build

For the indicator-sound Ubuntu Notebook must be removed from the repo. Go to the mint-menu > System Tools > Ubuntu Tweak > Package Cleaner > Purge PPAs > Ubuntu Notebook

Then go to Package Manager and install indicator-sound

mint-update icon and network manager applets are not movable. These are not meant to be removed.

This wouldn't of stopped Conky from working. It must of been something else that broke it.

Make sure dockmanager and python-dockmanager are installed.

well thanks for the promt reply.

that solved almost all my issues, though it's almost more convenient to just turn my speakers off than manually set the sound to headphones.

would you mind explaining or pointing me to an explanation of why the netbook PPA had to be removed, just for my own understanding.

conky came back after a reboot, is there an app installed which lets you customize the information it displays?

is there an app to configure other hard drives for automount?

thanks

I have to i liked pinguyos very much, but i have disappointments also. Im ameture ubuntu user and using ubuntu for 2 months. I was using ubuntu 10.04 before and installed all necessary updates and softwares from repository it was working well, then i switched to pinguyos.

Warnings:
Shutter applications directory is to home/workspace once i changed this it works fine (not showing home/workspace in shutter preferences though)

Doubts:
Can you please brief me what the startup application gsettings data conversion does ?

Request to include app:
Im really disappointed to see tomboy has been removed in your distro i just love it and its my life line and hope you will consider adding in your futher distros.
Please please include clementine in your next distro. i cant install it due to some error in downloading a dependency called lib sqlite.
I tried both of 32 bit and 64 bit pinguyos.

Great addition:
Im using oracle VM for the first time and its just awesome thanks for adding it in your distro.

Confusing and annoying:
I want to know why you have added keyboard preferences to be merged into notifications area ? Its so annoying to see it occupying my task bar, is it that much important ?
By the way how can i remove that ?

I dont see ubuntu software center in the linux mint pane i need to search through the find option and need to hit it, it feels soo long please include it in the pane itself like the linux mint has.

Over all im settled with pinguyos and hope i will be using your distro forever :D
Please consider my suggestions to include into your next distro release (dont release it sooner though :P )
Wishing you the best and thanks a lot for your hard work in bringing us a great customized ubuntu distro.

PS: I have attached the screenshot of my desktop, let me know if i can make it more eyecandy :D

Go to Menu > Preferences > Startup Applications, and uncheck the box to CONKY. That will get rid of the info panel (once you log-out).

That's odd that the bottom docky panel is a bit sluggish and the side one is ok as its the same program.

the docky bottom panel is still a bit sluggish in the i686 version. but i reduced the size and now its hardly noticeable.

another fix i noticed is the firefox theme, the 64bit one i installed previously had a firefox theme which was too whitish, the menu options were almost impossible to see on the white background. now the menus are in black.

I received two errors while looking for updates, the remastersys and the vlc ppa.

But all in all, i just love this spin-off. it suits my taste and has everything i need. thanks a bunch for including deluge.. I just hope that all the packages will update automatically via their ppas.

Is this the right (only?) place for installation queries re Pinguy? I hope do as I have one right here:

My d'load of Pinguy ISO ran and installed well on VMware inside a Mac (10.6.x). A separate download for Windows failed to run (as 'Live') on VirtualBox inside XP on a Toshiba and XP. It got to the desktop wallpaper and empty menubar and stopped, locked.

I burned it to a DVD (distros are getting BIG these days!) and the DVD live-installed as far as a black screen and had to be crashed to escape. The same DVD installed under VMware on the Mac, no problem.

The Tosh has a Pentium-M 1.6 and a Gig of RAM. Sitting in a partition on it is Jolicloud 1.0 (also Lucid) so the underlying OS can run on this hardware. Is it up to Pinguy's default resource demands?

I could overwrite Joli and install Pinguy but feel it will just crash to no benefit.

Very pretty distro! I'm hunting for a 'just works' one that gives a lie to the crack "Life's too short for Linux".

Greeting,,

I am a fairly new Linux user, started only less than 2 months. As I was new, i just tried a lot of different type of distros, some with success, some outright failure.
Some have no sound, some no display, some cannot get internet, some cannot play MP4 or other common video file format. So i took me a long time to read forums and realise the whole world of various types of linux.
Well never mind, i started and got to look around.
My first success is LinuxMint9, then Puppy, and others.

after a long time, i found this pinguy os, now when I read the forums and details, i could catch up many terms that were new to me two months ago.

So I downloaded the new version just released 10.04.1, and tried on one old laptop and one desktop.
I can say WOW, i love it, it had all I want plus more, as i just successfully installed on both 5 year old laptop and a 2 year old desktop, I am now trying to use it for learning.
What i can say is my usage is fairly standard, surfing websites, playing with various software, watch youtube, download movies, share files across my home network, the most stable was Win XP file sharing, many other Linux distros I installed has some kind of difficulties on network sharing, and this pinguy OS, i must say here, it just worked, right click, follow similar procedure like Win Xp, and few seconds later, i already can share files with Win XP machines without worried on installing Samba plus several command lines that i learnt to do on LinuxMint9 and others.
On youtube, i could even just click and download the flv file since the plugins are already installed.
I also do not have to go hunting for installation due to non-free kind of policy on some distros.
So this remix had provided me a lot of ease of installation and ease of use.
and I am very happy to find this remix.
i have just played with this for half a day and really like it so much that i register here to post this first message and to say thank you.

i certain will spend more time to play with it and learn more.
When i faced with problem, i hope other forumers can help me.

Thank you very much for this OS.
best regards.

Thanks for the snappy response.

Am downloading that version as I write... No I'm not... oh yes I am, it's just so slow when the traffic management cuts in...

There is a *basic* website up at the moment where you can donate to help with the project.

Many thanks for the Pentium M version link - it works fine.

Now that it's installed (on Compaq N620c) the Update Manager tells me that 2 of the repositories are unreachable. They are geekconnections.org (remastersys) and ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/etc. and both have Lucid directories missing. Are these of any immediate significance?

The remaining 10 updates are coming in with apt-get-like assurance.

Just so you know.

geekconnections.org goes on and off all the time, but as the program hardly updates it's not a big deal.

ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn is for the new versions of vlc. There are a few other repos that it can come from it's just an older version then whats in c-korn. It's been like it for a few days. Hopefully it will be sorted soon.
