I gave up on fixing a gnome bug which had gradually manifested, with more things going wrong. i.e. The gnome bottom bar vanished (the one containing the windows), no power icon, no bluetooth icon, no network connectivity icon. I reinstalled all the gnome stuff in sight - to no avail. "Think windows", I thought, "Don't try an understand it, just reinstall it and move on". So I moved my documents into a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. Aaargh, same problem manifested! :-(

I temporarily hid all my documents, problem solved. Returned them, problem reappeared. So there's something toxic in my home folder which is poisoning my gnome. Check dmesg, nothing has segfaulted this time, but previous dmesgs showed lots of dead gnome-applets. thought I'd tried that. Removed ~/.gnome2 and ~/.gnome2_public but no improvement. Any ideas on where else to look?
