Anybody know where I can get a trial version of Poser? I'd like to give animating/graphic art a spin.

I tried DAZ3d and Blender as free alternates, and found them impossible.

DAZ did not seem to have current instructions on its site despite the new version being almost a year old, and the current one seems to work a lot differently than the older ones for which there were plenty of now obsolete videos, and the free version was extremely, extremely limited in any case, with only one character.

Blender seemed like a mosh to me; not at all user friendly.

Are there other alternates out there I can try?

Well Blender is an all solution like 3DMax or Maya. Poser more focuses on character design and animation.

Windows only http://poser.smithmicro.com/trial.html

A great site for Blender users and some great tutorials. http://www.blenderguru.com/

Thanks for the tip. Poser 7 is on a closeout sale, and the smithmicro company also sells a cartoonizer that I didn't know about, and I'm thinking of getting that too.
