I just bought this cpu http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360274631132&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT for cheaps anyone know where I can find a compatible motherboard? Also will a generic graphics card work, a generic psu?

Sun SPARC? Heard of it. Why not just do a headless SSH install if it's a server?

You can get the parts here-

http://www.memoryxsun.com/sparcom.html

Not cheap though, and I'm not 100% sure that you can use a fujitusu sparc CPU in a sun motherboard.

I have no idea if you can use a generic x086 PSU, and as for video cards- ha. Not as far as I know, the sun sparc stations I've seen have no ISA/PCI/AGP/PCIe slots anyway....

ha I thought it'd be a cool hobby build, but if it will be to expensive I might just suck up the $23.80 (including shipping) I paid for the cpu.

Well since SPARC is dying away, I don't think I'd do it for anything other than a hobby. Could be fun, though. What OS are you going to run? Open Solaris?

the processer is a sparc64 which evidently has teir 1 freebsd support, so I was thinking that since it's the one I'm most familar with.

Debian runs too. But by looks of that CPU, I would say that it is for big boxes. You will hardly find a motherboard for it. Those were sold all-in-one

PS: Just googled this: http://rambo.id.uw.edu.pl/cpu.html?show=SPARC/Fujitsu-SPARC64-V-1.35

It is primepower series, typical price of those boxes was north of $100 000

I just found a mobo on ebay for $399 or best offer, I sent in a lowball offer (here's hoping, I sent in a lowball for the cpu too and got it :P)

I miss Sparc :(. Though the machines I've dealt with were sold as units, so I don't know about building one from scratch.

I'd never heard of anyone building a SPARC workstation up from scratch. In my area (Northern Virginia, USA), occasionally old SPARCStations will be offered for sale, but usually as complete workstations, including all peripherals. Ditto SPARCServers--I seldom see them parted out.
