Hi there,

I have a Huawei E800 UMTS-Modem and my provider is "drei" = "3"

since an update to 10.04 i have following problems:
I can connect to my provider but most of the times I can not access the internet.

first step: I tried to ping:

noah@meinrechnername:~$ ping www.google.de
ping: unknown host www.google.de

didnt work so I checked my DNS-Servers at /etc/resolv.conf:

# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 213.94.78.17
nameserver 213.94.78.16

all there, ok...
then I tried to ping an IP outside (193.99.144.85, www.heise.de):

noah@meinrechnername:~$ ping 193.99.144.85
PING 193.99.144.85 (193.99.144.85) 56(84) bytes of data.

got nothing, after stopping the ping attempt with ctrl+c

--- 193.99.144.85 ping statistics ---
107 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 106022ms

I also tried the "route" command, although I do not really understand the information I get with it, here it is:

noah@meinrechnername:~$ route
Kernel-IP-Routentabelle
Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.64.64.64 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0
default 10.64.64.64 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ppp0

More Informatin about my connection:

ifconfig:

ppp0 Link encap:Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindung
inet Adresse:10.11.72.91 P-z-P:10.64.64.64 Maske:255.255.255.255

TX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:3
RX bytes:146 (146.0 B) TX bytes:185 (185.0 B)

can anyone help me to get a working connection to the internet?

tried gppp and kppp as alternative tools to "NetworkManager" but it seems like NetworkManager kicks them all out, I wasn't even able to fully close it. :/

I also discovered, that my computer does somehow have the wrong information about my card, "lsusb" gives me:

Bus 007 Device 002: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem / E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
but it is definitely a "Huawei E800"

can I suggest that you download and install sakis3g: it has worked well for me:

most report it very effective

ok, i read through this linked page, but it didn't quite satifiy me :/
can you give me a short explanation what exactly this sakis3g does? i did not really find out what it is for. will it establish the connection? will it do something with my USB-Modem?

sorry, but i cant read programmed code as if it was a nice novel =)

edit1: found out what it does, but I still think that network-manager and moden-manager block even satis3g. in fact I get this msg when I try to connect:

Port /dev/ttyUSB0 is currently occupied by 1096 modem-manager.

edit2: seems like satis3g just helps with connection with your modem, which was never a problem. after connection via satis3g i have same status as in my first post. connecting is definitely not the problem!

well, as I said before, I do not have problems with connecting. And there is also no problem with setting up the modem.
anyway, I was able to surf via this modem yet, but somehow it stopped working since i updated to 10.04.

I can connect, and I even get an IP and a DNS Server (see first post) but i can not ping or visit any site in the internet :/

hi

tried to ping 10.198.179.151 from the internet address ( ifconfig ) and this is unresponsive from where I sit , Note I have a ISP who's servers NS1 and NS2 won't respond to pings , but responds to the IP address given from the ifconfig so I am assuming the "10.198.179.151" should have responded EDIT: now responding ? ::: Now stoped ,weird

try deleting the connection in NM and then configure the modem again and see what happens, also can you confirm that NS1 and NS2 are the correct servers for your ISP and your payment plan

Added: what are the IPv4 settings

I deleted and configured my mobile broadband connection several times jet :D didn't help.

the NS1+2 I get are - by "whois":

I am pretty sure that this is my ISP altough I do not know which NS is - if there even is one specific - in my payment plan.

IPv4 is on "Automatic(PPP)" setting in NM

Hi

can you try

disable router and any other network interfaces except the 3g,

then try the 3g connection and see what happens
if the 3g works,then it could be the router address or routing tables,

also of note for your 3g modem it may have two connections available , see below extract from the " file:///usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml ", as used by the Network Manager

<provider>
<name>Three</name>
<name xml:lang="de">Drei</name>

<gsm>
<network-id mcc="232" mnc="10"/>
<apn value="drei.at"/>
</gsm>
</provider>

<provider>
<name>Yesss</name>

<gsm>
<apn value="web.yesss.at"/>
</gsm>
</provider>

so just wondering if your configuration is correct , or if the network manager or modem manager is picking the wrong APN, if you go back to the how to as mentioned there is a detailed explanation of how to find the correct APN and dialcodes using a serial terminal, as mentioned by PDC , try using Sakis3g, this is also listed at the howto,

if I disable all but broadband, same things happen, it connects, but "does not find its way out to the internet"

settings for ISP

<provider>
<name>Three</name>
<name xml:lang="de">Drei</name>
<gsm>
<network-id mcc="232" mnc="10"/>
<apn value="drei.at"/>
</gsm>
</provider>
When I check the other ones, for example ISP: Orange, there I can find this information in the same file:

<apn value="web.one.at">
<name>Web</name>
<username>web</username>
<password>web</password>
<dns>194.24.128.100</dns>
<dns>194.24.128.102</dns>
</apn>
<apn value="fullspeed">
<name>Web (no filtering)</name>
<username>web</username>
<password>web</password>
</apn>

but nothing like that for three, looks like this is done automaticly :/

the dialcodes and stuff initialisation strings... I used I got them from various internet sites, about 3-4 with all the same information, so I used that (don't know for sure where from, Ubuntu-Austria has a hp where I also found that info)

Have you been using other method of dialup IE wvdial gnomeppp , where the init codes are something like " AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP" "your APN ",

as I am wondering if the CGDCONT locations have been altered, and you are accessing the wrong plan or ISP , Reason you say sometimes you can get a connection

I've been using kppp pretty long, always worked (8.04) until the network-manager (9.04, 10.04) kicked in, since then I got mere troubles with kppp

this is the configuration I used there:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5564/bildschirmfoto1l.png

I always get

kppp can not find:
/dev/usb/ttyUSB0
Please make sure you have setup your modem device properly and/or adjust the location of the modem device on the modem tab of the setup dialog.

with kppp :/ need to work that one out

so if you plug the modem in, and into a terminal copy and paste the command

dmesg | grep tty

can you tell us what you get?

hi

looking at your kpp configs there may be possible errors

check these

Initialisation string 1: AT+CFUN=1
Initialisation string 2: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP" "drei.at"

Dial string : ATDT

your message shows /dev/usb/ttyUSB0

this may be /dev/ttyUSB0

I have just tried to configure kpp in 10.04 and the kpp is not Responding to " making a new connection Wizard " needs to be looked at , seems to be buggy in the devs area as well,
I could suggest using gnomeppp

Note ; when using AT commands Always use Capital letters , not all modems respond to lower-case AT commands
