I'm building up a playlist for a geek party. Rather, a regular party, but most of my friends tend to be geeks anyway :) So far I have this:

Matt Uelmen's "Tristram" from the original Diablo
E1M1 and E1M8 covers by Sonic Clang
"Kill Dash Nine" by Monzy
"The Day the Routers Die" by secret-wg
"Every OS Sucks" by deadtroll.com
"Dear p***s" by Rodney Carrington
"I Hate My Life" by Theory of a Deadman
"Virus Blues" by Vasko the Patch (you probably won't find this one online)
"Control" by Tracy Lords (Juno Reactor remix from Mortal Combat the movie)
"Song 2" by Blur (FIFA '98 main theme)
"Spybreak" by Propellerhead
"Conga Fury" by Juno Reactor
"2ndreal" by Purple Motion of Future Crew (from the "Second Reality" demo)
"P***y" by Rammstein
"Fat" by Weird Al Yankovic
"Mortal Melee" by Dan Nicholson, Precursors remix (battle music from from Star Control II, UQM remix)
"Baba Yetu" by Cristopher Tin (Civilization IV title theme)

That's about an hour or two of music. Anyone got some more, please keep them coming. There's gonna be booze to last us all night, so should the music :)

Why is it that every time someone speaks of "geek music" or "geek books", "geek" is a synonym to "crappy"?

Have you actually listened to any of these? They're not half-bad. Some of them are just cheesy ("Fat" for example), most are quite cool if you take them for what they are (tongue-in-cheek) and a few are actually award-winning. If that's your definition of crappy, I'd like to see some of your blacklist -- might actually like some of it :)

It seems that most of my geek friends (and myself) enjoy Mindless Self Indulgence.

If you want some nerdcore (i.e. hip hop music about being geeky), try MC Frontalot, MC Hawking, or YT Cracker

EDIT: Also, Gammacide is Slayer-style thrash metal about science, or in other words, pretty freakin' awesome.

Strange... Does copyright law apply only to certain countries?

Well just search Powerglove on Grooveshark: http://listen.grooveshark.com/
Or their MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/powerglove

They're a metal band which plays video game theme songs. They have the most awesome version of the tetris that I've ever heard. xD

Cheers

"P***y" by Rammstein

I love Rammstein, but that is really one of their worst songs. Try Engel, Mein Herz Brent, Sonne, Rosenrot...

"I Hate My Life" by Theory of a Deadman
That song just flat out sucks, and isn't even geeky.

"Song 2" by Blur
The only decent song on your list (that I know).

Why worry about "geek music" just to be geeky. Listen to what you like and stop 'trying'...it only makes you look like a fool.

OK so I did pick most songs for their plain idiotic pie-in-the-face value. Still, they're fun. Not necessarily good music (hell no!) but still fun. Which is what it's all about after a bunch of beers anyway :)

Rammstein are insanely good. They gigged here last week. It was a two-day fest featuring Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica on day 1 and Alice in Chains, Manowar and Rammstein on day two. That particular song is certainly on of their worst but it did get the crowd to roar the most. Oh, and there was beer :)

Me, I like all kinds of stuff. When I work I prefer something soft and soothing like smooth jazz, new age, acoustic, folk, blues, classic rock or classical. When I'm in the mood to play along I usually stick to blues an jazz fusion. When I party it's all over the rock spectrum, from Chuck Berry to Sepultura. And then there's Pink Floyd who have their special times and places. It still want to have some tongue-in-cheek songs for when we're incapacitated beyond playing, singing or heck, comprehension. Folks would either ROTFL or grab the remote. Hey, this is a Linux forum, it's all about choice (and 90% of them are crappy :) )

Someone told me programmers like Venetian Snares, or probably weird glitchy electronica in general, don't know if that stereotype holds up though. Can't say I know many programmers.

I was thinking Beastie Boys, they kind of come under the category of nerdy hip-hop.
