Trolls are not cool. They deserve to be executed by the state.

I stand by my original statement. I hate you all.

What exactly do you mean by "troll"?

Reading a lot but never posting or being a general **** to people for no reason?

I'm sometimes a **** to people, but I generally have a reason.

Bachstelze

Why, yes.

Also dragos240 is not cool.

dragos240 is cooler than all of us, and this should be the new thread title. :P

Neither. Being a troll means posting threads/messages not because the topic at hand interests you, but just to see people's reaction.

For example someone could say "Ubuntu sucks!" even if they like Ubuntu, just to see people try to defend it, and get a good laugh.

I never do so intentionally, but I am generally honest on forums, which people will oft. construe as trolling. And really, some people are just begging for it.

I never got it figured out. People generally say "RiceMonster" or "him/her, he/she".

And no I am not, nor do I ever plan to be, a troll.

There are places where trolling is permitted and even expected. I would like to politely remind everyone here that it is explicitly and absolutely forbidden in the Ubuntu Forums and that this might be a topic best left alone...

I troll the troll's. I'm somewhat of a vigilante troller. Do not try this at home though kids. You will still receive infractions.

Nope, I never do.

chessnerd
July 4th, 2010, 05:22 AM
No.

I never mean to, at least. I occasionally look back on old posts and wonder if it seems trollish, and have occasionally judged my past self as being a troll, but I never intentionally mean to aggravate people or cause trouble.

Something is missing from the poll, the age of a troll, seem's like a childish pastime.

i never really "troll", as i understand the word to mean.

but i'll sometimes assume a set of beliefs that are not my own. not to elicit emotional turmoil (which is trolling), but to make logical fallacies more apparent.

eg:
someone else - "ubuntu is better at everything than windows."
me - "yup, i agree. i thought i liked CoD4 when playing on windows, but playing it with WINE on Ubuntu... wow! better framerates, less buggy, and a heck of a lot more fun! ubuntu is indeed better at everything than windows."

i like satire.

not to get anyone hot and bothered, but to point out that "everything" is a pretty strong word to be using in this context, in that example.

do we/you-the-reader consider that a valid distinction, or no?

and, generally, the less serious the forum the more likely i am to do that. never in the support area, for example, and a strong 'from time to time' here in the cafe.

When I see a thread on /b/ about trolling people with a certain phrase on Omegle, I always open a bunch of Omegle tabs untill I find a troll and simply respond "The Game"

I guess that makes me a meta-troll.

Going by eartpig's distinction, which happens to reflect my view on the subject quite well, it depends on your intention

.... not to elicit emotional turmoil (which is trolling), but to make logical fallacies more apparent.

not to get anyone hot and bothered, but to point out ...

So, do you ?

<snip>"everything" is a pretty strong word</snip>

off topic but kinda related, my biggest pet peeve is how everyone over uses the word ever with out realising it takes into account past present and future. I don't find it bad when used within the past tense like it had been the best ever but I hate it is the best ever.

yes, but only lighthearted fun, nothing malicious.
I came close to getting banned from here first day, but it all got smoothed out.

BTW I'm bummed about my pointless post thread getting thrown in the slam

All you have to do is say something bad about Linux or Ubuntu and your instantly a troll here.

Ojustaboo
July 4th, 2010, 05:04 PM
I never troll.

I do sometimes play devils advocate though, giving a different viewpoint to what my actual viewpoint might be. I don't do this to troll, but when I see discussions taking place where a large part of the contributors seem blind as to how things work in real life.

Not talking about say an ubuntu forum where everyone obviously prefers ubuntu, more politics/crime/housing/benefits/religion etc

Used to troll all the time (especially when I was playing WoW). But it gets old and boring... and life is too short... etc. So now I mostly just avoid places where idiots are gathering.

Bachstelze

We now need a poll to see how many people use multiple accounts on forums.

If you use multiple accounts, it totally strips the fun out of it. The fun part is to have people believe it's a legitimate thread, and reply to it thinking so. This is why a good troll is not outrageous or inflamatory (otherwise you will get "obvious troll is obvious"*), and requires careful crafting. Trolling is a art.

* Well, not always, some people are extremely easy to troll and will fall for the most obvious ones, but usually every forum has some users who know better.

...believe...
Omg, you believe in something? That makes you a zealot:lolflag:.

On topic and in more serious note: I never troll intentionally, but I also say things I believe in. And for that, I sometimes get called a troll or a zealot, usually by people who are obviously trolling. But thats Internet.
