I have recently installed Ubuntu on my HDD, I was thinking about learning to program with the free software that is available through Linux. I have done a very small amount of Java programming with J Creator where I made a non scientific calculator.

what I wanted to know is can you advice me on any of the free software that will help to to learn C++ and Java programming, can you also recommend any sites or resources which are free that will also help me to learn to program.

Regards

Java is opensource, just use an Open Source IDE like NetBeans of Eclipse.

gcc is the compiler most used for C++ on Linux, and it is of course open source as well.

As for sites, http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/ and http://www.cplusplus.com/

While you're here. Check the sticky threads; they have links to programming resources for several languages.
