View Full Version : Anyone ever seen Revolution OS?

Just found this on Amazon's website:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000A9GLO/qid=1143660586/ref=br_lf_d_13/103-6269954-3889421?n=518966&s=dvd&v=glance

"REVOLUTION OS tells the inside story of the hackers and computer programmers who rebelled against Microsoft and the idea of proprietary software to create GNU, Linux, and the Open Source movement. Shot on location in Silicon Valley on 35mm film and in widescreen, REVOLUTION OS captures an offbeat group of characters who are three-parts libertarian, two-parts communist, and one-part bad garage band."

I got it last year for my birthday. It was a great movie, I watched it a couple of times.

Yeah I really like it, it's a great movie. I've seen it 4-5 times.

Since seeing this, I've tried quite a lot of times to ask around on IRC though: Are there more movies like this? After all, perhaps this movie deserves a modern update after 6-7 years (now). On IRC, I mostly don't get any good answers: ##linux: get pr0n, #other places: umm.. what's that? Matrix is nice.

So.. do we know any other good Linux/GNU/free/open software documentaries?

The only movie I know of that is about computer development is "Pirates of Sillicon Valley"

I also picked up a copy of "The Code" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0315417/) but again, haven't gotten around to watching it yet :) There's usually a copy to be found floating around on eBay.

Seen both the Revolution OS ands the code many times time atleast 6 times each both well done .
I'm not sure which I prefer as they are both great both are packed full of history y.
I prefer the code in tthe code you get to see linus and his family both do make you want to code straight afterwards I usuually watch them either before coding or before going to bed.
The code is many in english but parts are in finnish (like when his family is are talking)

Seen it, pretty interesting movie if you like to learn about the history of the OS. It's not like Pirates of Silicone Valley though, which was an actual movie.

Hey, great tip!

I found the movie here, on google video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3498228245415745977&q=Linux), I'm currently downloading it.

Talk about luck(?) though, the movie is subtitled in swedish (not finnish), so I can understand all parts of the movie (although 95% is english, only some swedish, finnish and chinese)

February 6th, 2007, 05:18 PM
There are many lines in the movie that made me laugh out loud, such as Michael Tiemann's Linux vs. communism anectode, and as Red Hat shares go up to a record high, Larry Augustin asking Linus "Did you expect anything like this when you started Linux?" and him answering "Oh, absolutely".

But there's nothing in it as hilarious as The GNU Stallmans:

When Eric Raymond started the movie with that line, i knew i was in for something special!

Its ironic that the google sidebar says download > windows/mac....you can still play the avi file in Linux but it would have been nice to see download>win/mac/llinux esp as its a video about linux!

I believe this "movie" is under the GNU license (or maybe copy left) so sharing it isn't illegal.

IgnacioMiller
April 23rd, 2007, 10:24 PM
It is illegal, the author said so when he was interviewed on TLLTS.

Reference:
http://tllts.org/mirror.php?fname=tllts_180-02-21-07.chatlog

And I quote:

54:40 - a generation that does not value content?, Google video is illegally showing the movie

m.musashi
April 23rd, 2007, 10:47 PM
Well, if it's illegal to share then that's rather ironic given the content. I would think most of the subjects in the movie would be against that. I thought I saw something about copy left when I watched it but oh well.

Now that you mention it, I also remember that. However, I think it was the description text that was put under copyleft, not the movie itself ;)

Actually it is copywrighted and was removed from Google Video once. I noticed it is back.

The documentary by J.T.S Moore is sold on DVD and I guess he said he prefers people buy it but he didn't have the money or time to stop everyone who posted it for download. So I guess he kind of gave up

Yes, I've seen this a long while ago. It does a pretty blanced job of showing the beginnings of free software and the phenominon of the GNU/Linux operating system. Its kinda on the old side, and both free software and its premiere OS coud use an updated documentary. Does anyone else know of any new titles then this?

yeap, J.T.S. Moore tried to get Revolution OS taken off google video, but they don't seem to care. he said he wants to make a "Revolution OS 2", but can't because he doesn't have the money, and that's absolutely down to piracy!

Revolution OS is copyrighted, and was never legally distributed on the internet. The only legal way to view it is buy purchasing the DVD and paying the director who felt it necessary to create this great documentary. The director was interviewed on the Linux Link Tech Show several months ago, and he lamented the fact that his work was being pirated by the very people he was trying to help.

Some legal questions have been raised about this content. I've closed the thread and removed the links.

Please note that if you wish to link to someone else's work, it is your responsibility to demonstrate that it is not encumbered by restrictive copyrights. Simply saying "I don't think it's copyrighted" is not adequate.

Would BBS happen to stand for Bulletin Board System?

It would indeed!

Linky: BBS: The Documentary (http://www.bbsdocumentary.com/)

So, I sort-of typo'd it before. It's not BBS: The "Movie" but "Documentary"...

I used them when I was in high school in the 80s, and then throughout the 90s prior to having an Internet connection. Also I was active on the Dr. Who echos on FidoNet.

Mmm... good times. 2400 baud, 14.4K, 33.6K, 56K...

I started out way back at the beginning using some terminal program I don't even remember the name of, then Red Ryder, then ZTerm.

I have three grandkids that just started using Linux because their grandfather uses it and they never saw it so I sent a link to them. I also posted it on facebook.
I just watch the whole thing for the first time.
Very impressed.

If you watch it on youtube, your IP address is recorded and sent to the police and you are hauled off to jail. All 13,477 people that have viewed it on youtube are now in prison. ;)

I netflix'd it about a month ago.

I half expected it to be completely non-technical, hippy-oriented, free the world fluff. (my views on Stallman were a bit skewed)

Quite the contrary. If you're a newb and here because you really just want to learn about linux, it's a great flick. Well worth the time to watch.

Is it actually informative, or just some hand-holding Linux love-fest through the ages?

It is worth watching. I actually saw it one night on IFC before it was released on DVD I guess around 2002 or 2003 and got it recorded to VHS. I contacted J.T.S. Moore about getting permissions to present it at our next LUG meeting and he gave a thumbs up given we buy it on DVD when it was released, which I did as did most people in the LUG.

Since then we showed it once more in 2007 and I've watched it no less than a dozen times since then. It's truly an amazing piece of work, and I wish J.T.S. Moore or someone else would revisit the topic and make an updated version for the 20th anniversary of Linux since Revolution OS was more a snapshot of the first 10 years.

Just think! All this may be in the Computer History Museum someday. This is history in the making and I am glad I got to see some of it in my day.

I don't even remember where I got it, but somehow or another I got a digital copy of it, I've watched it a couple of times, it's an excellent video.

I sure hope so... Revolution OS was awesome in its day, but given JTS Moore started working on it around the 10 year mark of Linux there has been MUCH development in the world of Linux since then.

The only bummer is much of the happenings within the Linux community in the last 10 years have been related to legal issues, companies going belly up, or licensing debacles. The first decade was almost magical with the rise of Linux, but I'm afraid the second decade if put into a documentary could be frustrating to watch.

Hi, I would really appreciate if you could help me with something. I really like this movie and I thought it would be nice to download it, but when I issue that command, this is what comes up:

nubuntu@nubuntu-desktop:~/Videos$ youtube-dl -o %"(title)s" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjaC8Pq9-V0

I am running FF 4 with the addon Video Download and it works great. Give it a try. You go to the video page and click the icon in the Navigate bar and it starts the download. very simple.

None of these addons are needed. Flash YouTube videos once completely loaded are stored in /tmp/. Just copy them from there.

Your are right on this one, I use the FF addon to download videos I do not watch. Like right now I am downloading one as I write this. It is sitting at 84% done.

Hi all,

I just saw the documentary "Revolution OS!" about Linux and it left me with a question. The closing moments included something that said,

"On June 27th 2001, VA Linux announced it was exiting the computer systems business due to mounting losses..." and something about microsoft announcing its plan for a shared-source program in order to combat the open-source movement. The ending seems as though Linux "lost," or just gave up at that point. Clearly we're here talking about it now so it's not like they obliterated us. Can anybody shed some light on what happened from there, if anything other than the obvious "Linux kept moving but in a less prominent way"?

Thanks. =)

It was basically just an IPO that was incredibly successful, but then the stock fell dramatically when the tech bubble burst, and the company was unsuccessful. Honestly, it's more about the perils of the stock market than anything else. VA Linux was unsuccessful not because of the Linux part, but the other parts...

Red Hat did their IPO 6 months before VA Linux, were also wildly successful (their stock was anyway), and today have a market cap of 10 billion dollars.

Edit - as for what Linux did after that point, they simply took over servers and IT infrastructure, embedded devices, and the internet through incredibly large social networking and cloud computing sites. People make too much of some things. Linux hasn't enjoyed a ton of success on the desktop, but in applications where people actually care about performance, stability, security, scalability, etc..., Linux dominates. As of today Linux (through Android) is also dominating the mobile space.

Ah I see. That makes sense. It's more like the movie ended with a "one small battle lost" scenario. Also, what you say there definitely broadens my thinking on the application of Linux. At first it didn't occur to me that there was more to the success of the OS (or family thereof) than just on the desktop front... Although, when I finally do get my own desktop computer, it'll totally be Ubuntu/Kubuntu all the way. =)

Thanks!

On a side note, I just noticed that this thread is dated 2006...lol

"Also, just notice that this thread is dated 2006" o.O Really? Weird...

But yeah, if you have NetFlix it's available to stream there. It's very uplifting and inspirational. =)

*Edit - I think I get it now. When I asked this, it seems like it got tacked on to other threads about "Revolution OS!" and I guess the first time anybody brought it up was 2006.
