I'm using 10.04, and have been cheerfully using Gnome since 8.04. I've thought that I should try out the other desktop environments, and I'd like to know if there are any tips for avoiding difficulties when installing xubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop on an existing ubuntu-desktop setup.

I gather, for instance, that applications that only work in one environment will show up in the menus of the other environments. I'm not sure how much of a nuisance that might be. I could try them out via virtual machines, I suppose, but that's not the same as running it natively and doing my daily work through them.

My experience has been, you're gonna have a LOT of apps installed, and some mighty long/big menus. Menus are editable of course.

So I don't imagine you'll have any real issues. I haven't. Try stuff, and apt-get purge what you decide you don't want to keep.
