how do you have them setup so you aren't turning your head 24/7 and don't lose focus on your main task? it seems like 3 monitors would be better just so you could face main monitor head on. please post pics if possible

For me, the "big" monitor is the one I focus on the most. The one to the right will normally have a reference document (text) open, and perhaps the email as well. 90% of the time, the right monitor is not used, but for that 10% of the time, it's really handy.

While I do this for CAD, it's really sweet for software development. You keep the output screen to the right, and the code window in front of you.

I have 2 'monitors', but my setup doesn't exactly address your scenario - my second monitor is my TV, in another room:

I have the main monitor right behind the keyboard, and then the other monitor off to the right.

triple monitor setup with your left and right ones running without X, with green on black terminals makes you feel powerful.

Agreed. I don't even see the code anymore. I just see blond, brunette, redhead...

My setup (http://i.imgur.com/mtG1a.jpg).

I don't have a problem with 'just' two monitors.

I'm looking to set up a 1920x1200 with a 1600x1200 on either side. I skipped two monitors because I'm OCD and like neither assymetry, nor having the space between two screens in my center of vision.

Sadly, they are 17" CRT's.

Main monitor = straight ahead. Second monitor is on the left.

Second monitor is always home to things like email, pidgin, reference web sites or reference documents. I often will watch movies or tv shows on the 2nd monitor while still working on whatever projects on the main monitor.

Couldn't live without two monitors.

I'm contemplating getting a second monitor.
Though, I'm curious how well it will work with a tiling window manager.
