A petition has been announced on the Eeeuser Forums, requesting Asus to resume the production of 7" netbooks. As a huge supporter of these tiny and incredibly useful computers, I've taken the liberty of re-posting the link to it here.

Petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/70xPASUS/petition.html

Thread at Eeeuser.com: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=86461&p=1

Please take the time to read and sign this petition; after all, the first generation of Eee PCs introduced many people to the world of Linux, so they can only be a good thing. Note the subtle request for preloaded Ubuntu. ;)

Is there a petition against the 7" netbooks, too? I had one. It was terrible. 800x480 is not an acceptable screen resolution.

It was really awful.

If you don't want one, don't buy one. As they say, it Works For Me. ;)

The question is, would you have anything to lose as a user of larger computers? If not, please don't denigrate those who would appreciate the smaller size.

If the sales were there they would have continued production. It is pointless for a company to continue to flog a dead horse.

The purpose of this thread is to publicise a cause that I feel is worth supporting. You have nothing to lose by signing the petition, but if you don't like the idea, don't sign it. Dead simple. :)

I have the 701 4G. I like the size or this machine. But isn't the 900 series the exact same size with an 8.9" screen instead of 7"? I don't know I have never seen one but the specs say the size is the same.

I calculate the Area of the Display to be approximately 60% greater on with the 900 series display over the 701's display. This is important to me since since i got my 701 I now need to wear reading glasses.

The 10 inch displays have about 100% more screen real estate compared to the 701... but the computer itself is larger.

Given this ... wouldn't you rather see more 900 series machines?

I certainly would like to trade my 701 in for a used 900 16g SSD model. I am running Ubuntu 10.4 UNR on the 4G SSD with gnome desktop instead of the Netbook desktop. I would love to increase my screen area by 60% without a bigger box.

The only thing I use my Eee 701 for anymore is as a wifi access point (and that's really just because I'm too cheap to buy a mini PCI card for my Soekris box).

I wouldn't be opposed to another 9" machine, but the 701 is more compact. The speakers are a lot better than those on the 901, and the use of a 7" screen kept costs and power usage down. In my opinion, the 4G is a great computer and I was sad to see it go.

How do you do that with Ubuntu?

I would strongly consider a 7" netbook if it was inexpensive, had good battery life, and had 1024x600 (or better) resolution.

7'' netbooks? That is too tiny.

To all those criticising the 800x480 resolution: please take the time to read the petition. :p

There are plenty of guides around. I couldn't tell you exactly how, I do it with OpenBSD.
