View Full Version : [SOLVED] Grub2: grub-mkconfig Finds distro But Does Not Create menuentry

I attach below the partial output from running grub-mkconfig without the option to create the configuration file. As you will see from the last few lines grub-mk-config has found Ubuntu 10.4 on dev/sda5 but has failed to create a menu entry. The output is the same using update-grub (although it does not post to the terminal screen). I suspect that the reason for the lack of the menu entry may be that dev/sda5 is a partition within an extended partition and that grub2 requires operating systems to be placed on primary partitions, however, I am not certain of this... can anyone help??

I have and Acer Ferrari One and I am trying to set up multi boot without disturbing the Windows boot. I have resized the Windows partition and loaded Ubuntu 32bit within partitions inside the extended partition that was created from the unallocated space. I used the advanced option on page 8 of the Ubuntu install so that I could load Ubuntu 32bit without loading grub2. This was installed on dev/sda5. I then loaded Ubuntu 10.4 64bit complete with grub2 onto the sdhc in the Acer. After this I used grub-mkconfig to update the grub configuration file, however, as you see that while it could find the 32bit Ubuntu it did not create a menu entry.

Can you post the output of the boot_info_script (https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/)? (If you don't know how to run the script, look here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/).)

The information in the boot info summary for sda5 seems wrong to me as it mentions fstab, but not any boot files.

File system: ext3
Boot sector type: -
Boot sector info:
Operating System: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Boot files/dirs: /etc/fstab

So far so good. The problem is, however, that I have no idea how you can put that right. The fstab file just tells the booting system what to mount, but beyond that has no real effect on booting the system.

I hope someone else can give you more information.

By the way, a linux OS can boot without problem from an extended partition. Windows, however, not being quite so clever, can not do that. I don't think that has any bearing on your problem.

Can you please open up a Terminal and hook up to syslog
tail -f /var/log/syslogThen open another Terminal and type
sudo linux-boot-prober /dev/sda5Then copy the output from both terminals here. Add the contents of the /boot directory on /dev/sda5.

Your problem really seems to be missing boot files. Can you mount the /dev/sda5 partition (for instance via Places on the panel) and show us the contents of its /boot directory?

Thanks ..... you are right there is nothing in the /boot directory on /dev/sda5...I should have checked...I installed the 32 bit Ubuntu as described in the original thread as I do not want to place grub on the mai hard drive with Windows... is there any way I can repopulate the boot directory.... the live Ubuntu usb does not obviously have anything that I can simply copy across.

Well, I don't really know why your /boot directory is empty, as it si not directly connected with Grub itself. The kernel images, which are supposed to be there, are necessary for the system to boot.

You can try the following method, I just changed the device to /dev/sda5 and the kernel to 2.6.32-21.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6252617&postcount=2

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic

OK, then still in the chroot environment do
apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-2.6.32-21-genericthen look into the /boot directory.

Thanks for your continued advice - unfortunately there are still problems.....

Reinstallation of linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.

(its not a physical problem - I was still connected to the web - I presume the sources list should be ok)

Rather than downloading a specific package lets just get the newest kernel available.

From your chrooted into sda5.

#refresh
apt-get update #resync package index
apt-get upgrade #newest versions of all packages update must be run first
#would upgrade you to the latest kernel in the repositories
#dist-upgrade is also able to remove existing packages if required
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get -f install
dpkg --configure -a

Your chroot may be missing a command or two. kansasnoob has it as one line but includes the resolv.conf which sometimes is required to connect to the internet. Also the last two commands have been mentioned. (they are not in kansasnoob's one line version)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8068512&postcount=10
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1470597
Neat huh?
Added sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/resolv.conf

kansasnoob's change sda5 to correct partition
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt && sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev && sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc && sudo mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts && sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/resolv.conf && sudo chroot /mnt

# new for lucid & karmic
dpkg-divert --local --rename --add /sbin/initctl
ln -s /bin/true /sbin/initctl
