Menu as drop-down panel

I'm a bit of a newbie, so here is a newbie question

How do i change my desktop menu, so that it becomes drop-down panels in the top instead of a menu on the left-hand side?

I need the answer carved out in stone in order to understand! :-)

I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lynx

you can't, in 10.04 the panel is locked.

you can log out & select "gnome" in the session menu to get a regular desktop with normal panels.
