Hi.

I'm an unexperiences Ubuntu user havning installed a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. However, when I'm booting my system now, the Windows option has disappeared from the menu, and the list only contains many different updates of my Ubuntu system. Can anyone try to explain me how I can retain my Windows option?

I only use Ubuntu for programming purposes, so skills regarding this topic is very poor.

I hope that someone can help me!

I don't see XP in sda1, it may have been wiped but the partition is there. It should look something like this.

sda1: __________________________________________________ _______________________

File system: ntfs
Boot sector type: Windows Vista/7
Boot sector info: No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block.
Operating System: Windows XP
Boot files/dirs: /boot.ini /ntldr /NTDETECT.COM

Turn off the computer and just use the ubuntu live cd for now, there are recovery options, but I'm not really familiar enough to instruct you on this. It may be that the bootscript is missing the XP but probably not.

Did this happen immediately after installing ubuntu or you were using the dual boot after install and it happened later?

Why do you have Lilo on the MBR chainloading to Grub2 on sda2?

I had the same problem: tried to upgrade 9.04 to 10.04 and Windows disappeared from the boot menu. I downloaded and ran boot_info_script055.sh as suggested above and get the output below. Now what do I do?

Thanks VERY MUCH in advance...!

It says you are using 9.10, not 10.04. From 9.04 you can't directly upgrade to 10.04.

Anyway, because you are still using grub1 (it doesn't automatically get upgraded), I would upgrade grub1 to grub2 first. You can read about the process here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

Make sure to do the process for upgrading, and do all of it. After you have tested chainloading into grub2 is working fine, finish off the process as per the instructions in the link.

I think grub2 will automatically detect win7 and include it in the boot menu once it is fully working.

After that you can consider upgrading the OS to 10.04. But why two upgrades in a row? Why not a clean install? Lots of things can go wrong with two sequential upgrades...
