I have heard about WINE being used to run windows-based programs through Linux. As far as i know that is it's use. So i have a few questions:

Do you have to configure WINE for every program running in it?

If so, what things would you need to configure for a game?

Anyone who has decent experience using WINE successfully and tips & tricks would be greatly appreciated. Essentially i don't intend on running brutally intensive newer games. But i'd like to be able to play older games like Myth 2, etc.

In wine you can install windows applications the same way as in windows, they don't really need configurations...
But you need to configure some programs that have compatibilty issues.

One of the neat things about Wine is that you can load as many or as few "programs" as you want in "C" drive. As the above post suggest, some programs may "install" just fine, while others are a nightmare. Wine maintains a database of programs that work and rate how well they work in Wine.

There is a program out there called CodeWeavers that is a really good program. www.codeweavers.com (http://www.codeweavers.com). Alot of the configuration that you need to do for Windows programs is done for you. And it doesn't cost much. Also, CodeWeavers has a "games" flavor to.

You can spend alot of time and hair configuring all this ... but again, CodeWeavers is the best I have used for Wine

Ok, so i managed to install a game with little difficulty using WINE. The problem now is that whenever i run the game it prompts me to insert the game's CD in the drive. It's already in the drive, but appears as if it doesn't recognize it (it's legit, not a burn or DL). If i hit [Enter] or anything else the screen disappears as if it terminates the program.
The game in question is Myth: The Fallen Lords (old school Bungie game). Any help?

you should take a look at http://appdb.winehq.org to see what applications and/or games reportedly running under wine.

:KS Yes, winehq has a large database with details about many games. If a game/program needs tweaking to make it work, winehq would be the place to check. I always go there before installing anything in wine.
