Problems with 10.04 LTS

Can anyone help? I was using the netbook version 9.04 and upgraded to 10.04. Everything seemed to go ok until I restarted my system. Now when I run 10.04 I have problems opening programs or folders. When I click on them to open they open and then close again quicker than I can click. I dont want to wipe my hardrive and start again as I have music/photo files that I don't want to lose.
