On one computer with Lucid 10.04 64-bit, I have installed Google Gears without any problem, and it works.

But, on another computer with Lucid 10.04 32-bit, Google Gears does not install: "Incompatible extension".

Curiously, the download page (http://gears.google.com/) says that 32-bit is supported and 64-bit is not supported, whereas I have it working on the 64-bit computer and not on the 32-bit one.

In both cases, I'm using the default Firefox 3.6.3 that comes with Ubuntu.
I've cleared the cache, signed out of Google, cleared the cookies, and signed in again, but I still get the problem when I try to download and install.

Any ideas how to get Google Gears working?

I've just found a solution.

The Google forum has a thread on this issue (http://groups.google.com/group/gears-users/browse_thread/thread/82f4ca1eac385772/f124f683078e69ef).

It suggests installing the apparent 64-bit extension hack (http://gears64.org/build/05340/3417) even for 32-bit (don't ask me how that works!).
