9.10 to 10.04

I want to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 leaving all my user files intact.

Instructions say that this is an option presented by the update
manager, but on my computer it is not.

Do I have a configuration problem?

Can I do this from the command line?

easy way to follow:

open synaptic repo and change "karmic" by "lucid"

but disable all the non genuine ubuntu repo (third party, ppa, manual installation)

then clean the system:
sudo apt-get clean ... autoclean ... autoremove (one by one)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f

you need to remove grub-legacy (grub1) and menu.lst if you still use it (conflict with grub-pc which need to be installed)

Why not just use the update-manager?

Also karmic uses Grub2 by default.

10. is not perfect and maybe in testing during few months, so it is better to keep 9.1 but you are free to try and why not , if nothing bad appears, to keep it.
bugs or problem depend on your machine, how to know i:tongue:f you are the right or good configuration ? well, at ubuntu.org ! most of machine are supported, but the best way is to burn a cd from an iso file or to make a request for a free cd at shipit (it comes after few weeks).

put your free cd and you will see if it is good or not : free to try.

update means from the same version and upgrade means another version, upgrade to 10
is only a choice : yours.
9.1 is supported until october.
10 is supported 3 years (LTS).
