Honestly, I would recycle it and then install Ubuntu on a machine that meets these recommended hardware specs: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

If you are on a really tight budget (who isn't these days? :)) and are stuck with this "craptop" for the time being, your best choices are the ultra-light distros like Puppy or SliTaz, in my opinion. Those specs should be enough for abiword, email, ubuntuforums, tetris, torrents, etc. (but more RAM would be nice).

If it does not have to be ubuntu, then I would suggest Puppy Linux.

Its about the lightest out there right now.

I would also suggest downloading the ISO for the liveCD and seeing if that laptop will boot that. It will give you an idea of what you could put on it. Lubuntu is the lightest of the "buntus" currently.

I already have a computer running ubuntu fine but i am just looking for something to play around with. I have tried running most distros but when i go to boot from live cd i get a black screen and that's it.
