Seriously. It should be the first thing you consult when you have a problem.

Part of being fluent in Linux is learning to not be afraid of the command line ("the terminal").

I have a copy of "Ubuntu Unleashed" and it has a great "must know" chapter in it, but there are plenty of tutorials on the web for this sort of thing. Also, Linux has its own built-in documentation in the form of "man" which is very useful.

Your best bet is to install Linux on another drive or try a live CD and just dabble with it. It can be frustrating at times, but once you figure something out it's very satisfying to know you accomplished something!

I threw myself into it. Used the support forums when I needed help, and learned the ropes by force.

That's what I did. It isn't all too hard if you are willing to set apart time to learn.

I would have to agree as well. I cant even count how many times i had to reinstall linux and windows when i was first starting out. My mistakes made me much stronger. Don't be afraid to poke around. Linux gives you the freedom to learn every aspect of your OS and its functions. I would take that freedom very seriously and at the same time have fun. And this support forum will help you with pretty much any issues that might arise in your linux travels. Good luck.
