I want to replace the start menu system in Ubuntu. Can anyone recommend a good replacement with support for keyboard launching?

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to open the menu in GNOME (the default Ubuntu desktop environment) if you go to the preferences menu. Once you have that assigned, the menu can be navigated by the arrow keys. Was this what you wanted?

in Ubuntu we call it the gnome menu. and i think this is the best.

Nah, I find the default menu a bit 'bare metal' and would like something with a bit more in the way of features. I like the menus in Mint and Opensuse a lot better. Its been a long time since I spent any serious time with Ubuntu or gnome, so am not up to speed on what the current apps are for improving this aspect.

Wow! Great stuff! I had a look at the screenshots and they both look like the goods. I will grab them and have a look. Thankyou!

While it's not a start menu replacement bar, Gnome-Do is perhaps the best keyboard launch app around. Check it out, it's become indispensable for me now!

Try GnoMenu, Cardapio or MintMenu.

try out gnome-main-menu?

package gnome-main-menu

restart gnome-panel (log out -> back in)

right click on panel -> add to panel -> Main Menu (the one with the non-ubuntu icon)
