a few years ago i was given Linux by my dad instead of Windows and my dad knew all about linux so i didn't bother learning how to fix problems. Recently my dad died so i am left to fix things on my own! I actually know very very little about computers. PLEASE HELP!!!

I upgraded to the new Ubuntu and when the computer boots up, it stops half way through loading and this message is displayed:

"Starting periodic command scheduler crond
Checking battery state...
...Done."

If anyone has had this problem and can please please help me fix it using simple, non-computer talk, i would bo so massively grateful.

Thanks in advance, Allie.

I don't know the specifics of this type of error (though I have seen bug reports about similar issues) to really advise you.

That said, installing the system again will often fix these types of problems.

I will provide you with some links which explain in clear language some of the basics:

If you have questions feel free to ask.

What did you upgrade from? Is doing a fresh install an option?

ok i did a fresh install to hardy heron (because my dad had that on a CD), which sadly lost me all my pictures and music etc. but i can now use the desktop - great.
however, i now have no idea how to get the internet to work.

this computer lark is a lot of effort! haha.

Probably best to download and install the most recent Ubuntu 10.04.
A lot of progress has been made since Hardy, odds are that now your network card will work out of the box.
Do you have a friend that will download it for you?

Edit:
There is probably a chance of recovering your photos and tunes if you don't wait too long, it is worth a search.
