I want about 20 cheap computers, I don't need new ones. I just need these for use as slaves for my cluster.

Auctions are the prime location for what you want.

Are you planning to use Kerrighed for your cluster?

Because just an FYI. it seems they no longer support 32 bit processors for their newer versions...

Are you near a university or school? Sometimes these places have surplus or other sales open to the public of computers, office chairs, and other random stuff.

Good place to pick up several old identical model PCs.

The best place for tested good used computers USED to be IBM, but it seems that they off-loaded to TigerDirect.com. This way, if you buy a busted one, you can get your money back. Some computers are "retired" because they are broken, so never pay more than 50% market for anything at an auction.

TigerDirect has systems (no monitor) starting at about $109 each.

For a AMD64: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6078305&CatId=5139 is $139 each.

They often have huge numbers of these, so you can have matching boxes. The IBM lease systems are very well designed and last forever.

Do you have local computer shows like the Market Pro shows? If so, you may be able to establish a relationship with a local vendor who would custom build you new systems to your specifications that don't cost very much.

We have about 100 old computers, 98 era. They want to get rid of them. They can oly throw them away, for whatever reason they can't give them away.

One thing to be aware of with auction computers. I've went to two live auctions with pallets of computers in them. In both cases, all the computers were missing their HDD's. Some were missing other components. It's faster and cheaper to remove and destroy HDD's than it is to erase them.

But one was DoD (Army) and the other was McDonnell Douglas. Schools might leave them in.

Doesn't look like they have many computers at the moment, but they are selling printers and monitors by the ton (literally).
