Ubuntu Server 10.4 small font size

I just installed Ubuntu Server 10.4 on a Dell poweredge 850 server. The font on the terminal is just too small. I googled and searched the forum but I was not able to get any thing to work to enlarge the font. Can I set the font larger with an environment variable or do I need to install X11 to get Xterm working? Please advise. I am command line only.

I have this problem now after upgrading from intrepid. i can ssh into it and set a good size font on the remote pc, but local login is awful: maybe a 6 pt font.
