Hi,

We're looking for a reliable and inexpensive web host for our Linux User Group website, so can anyone give some good suggestions? It seems there are TONS of fly by night hosting companies who get cheap hardware and throw up a hosting service at a colo, but I want someone who's reliable, established, and also not too $$$ since the cost will probably be out of pocket for me.

Can someone post some suggestions based on their personal experience? Ideally I'd love to find someone who can setup a VPS for us, but we can go with just a virtual web host as well. Also I need SSH access plus the standard LAMP setup.

According to Web Hosting Reports (http://www.webhostingreport.com/best-linux-hosting.html), justhost.com has good reviews, but what others can you guys suggest? Also I don't need much support given the server is setup with standards, but having support on hand is a nice perk as well.

Edit: reading through more reviews it looks like 'justhost.com' has pretty poor reviews... Blah.

Thanks --

Sam

I went with Linode based on recommendations from some others on these forums, and I can't recommend them enough.

You get you VPS, and can then choose and "deploy"a ldistro from the ones they have (and there are a few), and then build your LAMP server from there. Or, you can use one of their scripts to get a LAMP server up and running straight away.

Eitherway you get root access, and can use SSH.

The price isn't bad, especially for what you get, customer service is excellent so far, and I've no complaints about reliability.

I was checking out Linode earlier, but maybe you can answer this. For example if I went with the Linode 512 plan would this allow me to setup say two different VPS instances with 256 Megs/Ram each? Just curious if I'm understanding what they do correctly. If so that's awesome.
