Alright folks, I'm going to thank you in advance for your help. Here is the project, for something different, I would like to create a completely open source media editing rig. Now my question is which is better for the following programs, Intel or AMD?

Cinelarra http://cinelerra.org/

GIMP http://www.gimp.org/

blender http://www.blender.org/

Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

The CPUs I'm looking at are the i7 930 or the 1090T. I've heard Intel holds the lead for media editing [I've mostly seen Adobe benchmarks] but is the lead noticeable in these programs as well?

I would have to say get an Intel Core i7. It has 8 virtual cores vs the 1090Ts 6 physical. If you check this video out:

You will see that the 1090T with six cores performs just as well as the Quad Core i7s. You can really go wrong with either of the processors but I have to say that the i7 is a better choice.

AMD offer better bang for your buck. Unless money is no object or speed is of the utmost importance, go for AMD. Besides, bully-boy Intel needs the competition.

So really it doesn't matter then. I have an AMD X2 555, which may unlock to a quad or it may not. I think I will start with what I have and if my projects are screaming for more performance see about an Intel rig then.

Thanks for your help.
