Just wondering... I just upgraded my Dell Latitude D830 to 4 GB of RAM, but the System Monitor shows only 3.4 GB total RAM. Why is this?

imo this shows the usable memory - there is some space reserved for things like the kernel which is not shown

Presumably you are using a 32 bit system; I don't know the specifics of the Dell that you mentioned. 32 bit systems normally only can use approximately 3.4 GB of RAM. You should be able to use all of it if you use PAE. Or switch to a 64 bit system.
