Good evening,
I've just installed an ubuntu 10.04 lts system. It's working very well with one exception. I can get to the internet but cannot access any other machines on my local network!
I can ping the gateway but no other machines:
ping 10.0.0.1
PING 10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.02 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.622 ms
ping 10.0.0.5
PING 10.0.0.5 (10.0.0.5) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 10.0.0.8 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 10.0.0.8 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 10.0.0.8 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
I shouldn't be getting Destination unreachable here.
Here's the output from everything I could think of that might help:

eth0 is supposed to be a static ip address at 10.0.0.8. The vmnet* interfaces were added by vmware player.

I tried using the network connections program to setup the network but it did not work and tells me the connection has never been accessed. The network status notification icon in the task bar has disappeared.
I tried entering in the configuration manually:
more /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.0.0.8
gateway 10.0.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 10.0.0.0
broadcast 10.0.0.255
Any suggestions? Could vmware have borked it?
Thanks
