I read that by create a file called .hidden, you could name directories and files that you want to mark as hidden. This way you don't have to adjust permissions or rename files and add .s in front of their names.

I was wondering if I did this in the / directory, I could hide the system folders, but it would all still remain functional, since I'm not renaming them or changing the permissions. Would everything still work if I was to do this?

Edit: I went ahead and did this. Everything continued working fine. I rebooted and everything still worked fine. I wanted to make my root a bit more like Mac. Here are the results.

And when I press Ctrl H to view hidden files...

Here are the contents of the .hidden file in my root: http://pastebin.com/QGbcMuTx

So I can say it's safe to do this method to hide important system files and folders but still keep them working properly. Feel free to mark as solved.
