install of 10.04 64bit in vmware is unresponsive to keystrokes

installed 10.04 64bit in vmware workstation 7.0.1 on windose 7 on pangolin performance laptop (system 76).

login screen appears, mouse can move around and click on user name, but...

keystrokes do not register to enter password.

*xp x64 and chromium os installed as well, and both register the keyboard*

any help would be appreciated.

didn't think of using the on screen keyboard to log in.

experimenting with different key maps as there is no listing for my laptop.
