I have a Dell Inspiron B130 that my mom got rid of because it ran soooo slow. And it did with XP. It was horrible. So she bought something newer and shinier and gave it to me to do whatever and I killed it and attempted to install the newest Ubuntu 10.04 and it chugged even slower. I then tried Xubuntu 9.10 and it now runs smooth as butter (faster than my family machine that is 4 years newer and runs Vista).

When I first installed it I saw that there were 210 (!) updates to download. So I did...and it started to chug like crazy again. I did a fresh install (format HD each time) and it is back to un-upgraded 9.10 and it is great.

Are the updates what takes it away from the slimmer Xubuntu build and makes it more like the full Ubuntu build? Are there any of those 210 that I really HAVE to upgrade to be safe or can I leave well enough alone? I would include some details of them but they are really tech related and don't make a lot of sense to me (lots of "lib" stuff and "gnome" stuff and so on but rarely anything simple for a newbie like me).

My hope is to get this working and awesome enough to convince the wife and kids that Ubuntu needs to be on our main computer, too. :-)

Here is my terminal thingy just in case- my guess is this old computer is at its limit with 9.10 and that is fine with me:
