I had never thought about this, but it is a interesting conjecture. Personally tomorrow night I'm going to go see Zappa plays Zappa, Dweezil and the band playing the incredible music of Frank.

Some are some aren't, it is a acquired taste I suspect.

Like what you hear or not. Transcribed, Frank Zappa was an absolute musical prodigy in modern times. It took a talent of the nature of Steve Vai to even be able to technically transcribe his music. As far has his direct influence on Linux? hmmm, probably not much, but his music does appeal to those of eclectic tastes. Perhaps there is a correlation there somewhere with programmers and Frank Zappa, but I'm sure its probably because his album was playing when they were coding and nothing more. :)

He had some of the best around in his band Steve Vai, Vinnie Colaiuta, was the only person to play the audition perfectly in all the members. I would agree some day it will be realized how far ahead he was.

Don't forget Lowell George. He kind of got the sack from Zappa, because he did his own thing.

In an interview before Zappa died, he was asked if there were any guitarists that he respected, he replied both Lowell George & Jeff Beck, as they changed the styles of music that they played.

Thanks, I have those interviews on a HD I think, I will have to look them over again.

I read them in a mag' that I would have kept. I'm sure sometime in the future I'll have another look through the Zappa stuff.

He was also a highly regarded orchestral composer. Well known conductors have stated that when musicians from popular music make forays into writing for orchestras, they with very rare exceptions show that they are inept. Zappa was most certainly not wanting in that regard, he apparently worked with orchestras in Europe, as there is more appreciation for such music in Europe than the States.

He had problems with the Symphonic players with the difficulty of the music, and their attitudes. I believe with the London symphony a large group of the players got to drinking alcohol during the breaks.

I am really as I said partial to the instrumental stuff most of all, he had a unique solo style that sounds highly influenced by the Lydian Chromatic approach and Nicholas Slonimsky's approach, along with many other 12 tone and modern composers. May he RIP, I am excited to go see his sons show tomorrow night. I have the DVD set of a earlier recording at another venue in my city, where Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio sat in.
