Hi, I'm looking for educational software for my child. I want something that can teach him to count and to read using phonics. If you know of a good program let me know. Extra points if it runs on linux.

Thanks

Edubuntu. If you have ubuntu installed, you can install the edubuntu packages in Synaptic. (Quick Search for Edubuntu)

More specifically, there is a plethora of software you can try out for your kid.

For slightly older kids, I'd recommend taking a look at the KDE Education Project (http://edu.kde.org/)

For something a bit more simplistic and kid-friendly, I'd take a look at Sugar (http://www.sugarlabs.org/), the OLPC's student-based interface. Most repositories should have this.

Apparently, Gnome also has an education suite in the works, which can be found here (http://live.gnome.org/EducationSuite).

And finally, for younger children I would recommend the Quimo (http://www.qimo4kids.com/) distribution, as I've heard very good things about it.

Hi Rul,
I have a phonic chart and a CD that is great for teaching children phonics. The chart has colourful, interesting characters that the kids love. The CD has stories and information about the characters. It helps kids learn phonics and comprehension and also increases vocabulary.
I have downloadables that might be more suitable. The chart and the CD are $20.00. Kids love them
