Can it be done?

I am giving my mom a computer, an old 2006 laptop that was decent at the time. She lives in a granny unit in my grandmothers home. Her wifi comes from across the back yard all the way into my brothers bedroom in the front house (I will be visiting from the Bay Area next week).

So she barely gets a signal where her old desktop was before it blew out. Sometimes it cuts out. I also dont think they have it encrypted yet.

I have an extra router set up here....So I am wondering, can I go into the garage of the back house and set up the wireless router to pick up a signal from the other wireless router and provide a stronger signal to her whole back house so she can use the laptop in her bedroom?

How can I do this and also how can I encrypt these with Ubuntu?

I have a similar question/issue... I'm looking to take my current D-Link DIR-655 and have my old Netgear RangeMax WPN824's act as repeaters. Some websites say it's no problem, others claims it's impossible without wiring. No responses in a week, but lots of views? No network admins out there?

Great question. Any takers?
