Trying to remember name of phone thing

When I was at school last year, they had this cool little device. It had an input for a phone line, and on the other end, it connected to several physical phones, when someone called that room it would cycle through all the phones looking for one that wasn't busy, and would send the incoming call to it. It was like a mini call center!

Any idea what that type of thing is called?

I have heard of Asterisk, how would you go about connecting several phones and a phone line to it, I thought it was strictly VoIP?
