People often complain about how "Macs can't right-click". This is obviously untrue, but by default it couldn't until a few years ago. What are the positives and negatives of only having one click?

Here's how I view it..

People compare too much with technology. Some saw Mac as "lacking a feature" because Windows had 2 mouse buttons. The thing they needed to keep in mind was that it was not Windows! They saw it as if you couldn't copy/paste or change your desktop settings. On a Mac, everything is done totally differently so the one-button mouse was fine. Not really lacking a feature (old Macs weren't gaming machines).

This isn't just restricted to Macs.

Pros:
-Simplicity for first time technology users who are very young or very old (not saying the elderly are mindless, mind you; but you know how some of them are ;) ) No need to say "right click" or "left click" etc.

-You learn keystrokes which can carry on over to other operating systems

-Developers can't cram menus into the secondary click. The result is often a much more unified appearance with applications.

Cons:

-Gaming = No.

-Too many clicks to do simple copy/pastes

-Hard to adjust to coming from a "normal" environment.

You seem to be obsessed about Macs. Maybe you had a problem with a Mac in your childhood or something? :-k

I've only tried a mac a few times, and the thing that most bothers me is the lack of the delete key.
I'm used to it for typing. In a mac I've got to go all the way to the end of the sentence and use the backspace if I want to delete something that it's on the right side of the cursor.

Is there a substitute for this in macs that I'm not aware of?

Cheers

Thanks. :)
The next time that I have to type on a mac I'll know.

Still, you need 2 keys to do the same thing. :\
I like my mouses with 2 buttons and my keyboards with delete keys.

Mac users make mistakes less often, so they don't really need a delete key.

They already made a big one by buying a Mac.

When mice came onto the desktops, it was before GUI.

There was certainly a large debate between 1,2, and 3 button mice.

Most CAD systems favored three buttons (though there were mice with up to 20 buttons too). But word processors and the like were fine with one.

I still have a 3 button ATI mouse/card (mice support was sometimes built into the video card) on one machine.

Today, we have 3 button mice (L-R-Scroll) again.

The new MacBooks have a touch pad with no mouse buttons, but various motions replicate a 3 button mouse.
