I use firefox3.6.x, and i play online video (sockwave flash) often, but while opening the page (often has swf), the whole X restart, and back to login window of gdm. The problem not accured everytime i open the page, but very often. I met this problem both in ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, and also lubuntu 10.04.
So, i fall back to use firefox 3.5.9, and evrything seems fine . At least the problem above not apeer.
Anybody have the same problem?

I've had this problem too, but it seemed to go away after a few system updates. I believe it has to do with Ubuntu killing random processes when it starts to freeze up. Sorry that's not that helpful.

I had this issue also, with the X interface just freezing until I ctrl+alt+f1, and killed X.
Recently, I noticed it seemed to stop (or at least became less regular). I assumed it had to do with switching Internet interfaces...
I hadn't noticed it's relation to flash...
I had also installed "Flash-Aid" for Firefox, since I have 64 bit linux, and a 32 bit version of flash, which might have helped.
