like 6.x are quite often referenced in guides and information. is this because things work relatively the same since then or is there a big user group still using older versions?
im only familiar with 9.10 and up so i don't really know anything about prior versions at all...

i guess i could sumarize the question by saying, would there be any optimal reasons for running something older instead of using the latest or near latest?

You can see here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases which releases are still supported. I can't see any reason for running an unsupported version, but that's just me.

Well, I'm using Intrepid (8.10) simply because it works, I'm used to it and I just keep hearing bad things about Lucid. Realistically there is no reason for you to use older releases simply because they're old and not as good as the newer releases.

I'll probably update sooner or later, when i feel that the latest version has had its issues sorted out.
