Like many, I prefer VLC to be the default for all media.
On every install, I have to manually right-click each file type, select properties, open with and pick VLC to change the setting permanently.

Where does this setting get changed in the file system?? That way I'm hoping to be able to make all the changes in one hit, or write a script to do it after a fresh install.

I've scanned gconf-editor but I can't seem to find anything related to this.

Also, in *******, there were tools like regshot, filemon, regmon etc that allow you to see what changes as you altered settings in programs - REALLY helpful for finding out stuff like this. Is there someway to achieve this in Ubuntu? I know of diff but don't know how to use it for a situation like this.

Thanks!
