What's your IP address?

There are so many answers to that question it isn't even funny. :-) But in a nutshell most crackers scan an IP range looking for open ports and programs connected to those ports with known vulnerabilities.

If you really want to learn more check out http://www.securityfocus.com and read some of the articles and the various mailing list archives. They'll at least point you to further sources for information.

i have personally never been hacked either. but my school server has been hacked. from what i know all the times was because of negligent administration. the last time the school was hacked was because someone took down a firewall and opened up the redhat 8.0(unpatched, SWEET LORD WHY?) to the internet. they have since upgraded to mandrake 10.whatever. most school domains are regularly scanned because of the chance that this happens. also my company xerox is scanned by thousands of people daily.

keep the patches flowing, if you open and ports keep the firewall humming, those things should keep you safe. last but certainly not least, remember: secure friends don't let friends use windows.

Getting hacked is no fun. It has happened at least 5 times to me (dial-up, cable, DSL & with at least 2 different firewalls). Getting hacked is as painful as getting a virus.

I've never been in a car crash and I don't ever want to be in one, tyvm.
