A friend was going to pay a few hundred dollars to repair his Dell. I said I could see if I could work with it since he said "windows crashed", so I assumed I could just install Linux for him.

Problem is, I can't get any monitors to work. He wasn't sure of the graphics card. What can I do? Is the video card broken?

If you cannot even get the BIOS splash screen, the video may be toast. If you get that, but the CD blacks out it may be a different issue. Pop it open and see if it has a card or is built into th motherboard (and whether you recognize a brand name on a chip.

We had integrated video go out on a Dell Optiplex at work once, but it was under warranty. That was my first experience changing out an entire motherboard.

Google "Dell Dimension 5150" for the manual. There are 4 diagnostic LED's. After normal boot, all 4 should be on.
