I've just had an idea after my i've discovered plop thread, there must be tons of useful free software out there, like clonezilla, plop etc

i'm wondering can we make this thread into a comprehensive free software sticky list?

Mods, what do you think?

Anyway I'll start with:

Hardware Firewalls:
Smoothwall

Cloning Software:
Clonezilla

Bootloaders:
Plop

Might be a good idea for everyone to put what it exactly is as some can have some pretty oddball names.

yeah exactly, that was just a start. Have it in sections, ie hardware firewalls, cloning software, bootloaders etc

So this list would be for apps that aren't already on sites like osalt.com and the like?

Have it in sections, ie hardware firewalls, cloning software, bootloaders etc

Something like any of these these, or a hundred others...

I didn't know that site existed, more of a list of software that people on here have found useful :)

cool. :)
but how a bout a short sentence or two ,
a description of what each one is?

i know we can google, and i know what clonezilla is,
but the other two Ive never heard of, and it would probably be better for all if there was even just a few words on each one?

like,
clonezilla~ 'clones your entire system for use on other pc's or backups'.
Stellarium~ open source, real time desktop planetarium. http://www.stellarium.org/ . *awesome*. lol
Enna~ a Media Center app for all your media, music/video/books/etc... http://enna.geexbox.org/

or not?
:)

edit:, whoah, all those responses in the time i typed that. lol

brightside is a cool bit of software that makes your corners 'hot'.

I use it so that if I put my mouse pointer in the upper left corner, the screensaver kicks in; if I put it in the upper right, the volume is muted.

Downloading on Ubuntu is easy:

sudo apt-get install brightside

At the CLI, use 'brightside-properties' to set the properties. If you want it to run automatically on startup, put it in System/Preferences/Startup Applications.

Nice idea for a thread!

Isn't this the point of a repository?

Isn't this the point of a repository?

uhm,
except for the fact that the repos dont pick out special apps it likes and tells you of them.

It just gives you 'all' of them.

see the difference?
