Problem:
The default Thunderbird for Ubuntu 10.04 is version 3.0.4 and Mozilla Sunbird is not available in the repositories for 10.04. The official replacement is Lightning, a plugin for Thunderbird, but the version of Lightning that's on Mozilla's plugin site is not compatible with Thunderbird 3.0.4. There are a number of links for development versions of Lightning that are supposed to work with Thunderbird 3.0.4, but they are 32-bit. A common piece of advice on various forums is to give up and downgrade. You *don't* have to change your version of Thunderbird at all.
Solution:
This is the 64-bit build that worked for me. Download all three xpi files manually and install them from the Add-ons screen in Thunderbird. http://www.secudb.de/~seuffert/mozilla/2010-03-30%20-%20lightning%201.0b2pre%20x86_64%20linux%20english/
I posted on this topic yesterday talking about upgrading to Thunderbird 3.1, but I was wrong. Luckily my previous post is not showing up-- maybe the moderators didn't approve it because it was incorrect, or maybe because I couldn't resist complaining about retiring Sunbird before its replacement was ready. If you see that post, please ignore it. This is the better solution.
